I have always wanted to visit Japan because I have
always been interested in its culture. But the thing I did
not know about this country was the dark side of its
weather. This dark side is a devastative tsunami.
I was in Sendai in 2011. I was going to travel to Tokyo to see the rock gardens of
Taizo-in. I was waiting for a train when I suddenly felt something unusual. The
ground shook. I thought that it was a foreshock, which would probably, nished
soon. After a few moments, I saw frantic people had been heading for shelter.
But what were they escaping from? That was a tsunami. At rst, I did not know
what to do. I was only standing and looking at running people. When I nally
worked out what was happening, I started thinking about survival. I
remembered the ways of protection from the tsunami, which I had learned at
school, but everything was such a toss-up at this moment. I was feeling feeble.
My theoretical knowledge was powerless against the ceaseless tsunami. The
view in front of me was terrifying: Pylons were crumbling down, buildings were
collapsing. Everything was happening instantly. I was searching for a higher
place. I found it. As soon as I headed for a higher place, I noticed the rescuers.
fortunately, the evacuation of the residents nished without any sacri ce. But

this day still remains in my mind as the most horrible day in my life. I suppose
that nothing will be able to exchange it.
