DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS WORKSHOP UNIT 4 Measures of dispersion

WORKSHOP No. 2 - SECOND COURT

Teacher: Jenny Carolina Trujillo Bonilla

1. The Coliseum is studying the possibility of expanding its seating capacity and needs to know both
the average number of people attending the events and the variability of this number. The data refers
to attendance (in thousands) to nine randomly selected sporting events. Find the dispersion
measures: the mean and the variance of the sample. According to the results, can we establish that
the average is representative for the population?

8,8 14,0 21,3 7,9 12,5 20,6 16,3 14,1 13,0

2. In a company in the public sector, we want to obtain a precise estimate of user service time in
minutes. To this end, a sample of 60 data was taken from the people who come for the provision of
the service in the morning hours; the data were taken at random.

Table 1. Ungrouped data

30 39 22 35 37 27
32 18 27 35 34 28
27 35 20 16 38 27
32 33 38 26 33 40
39 30 30 34 20 33
30 27 35 16 25 30
24 25 31 37 18 34
29 28 35 31 31 23
22 22 34 16 15 29
39 36 31 21 26 28
Using Microsoft Excel:

a. Calculate the mean, variance and standard deviation with the data ungrouped. Calculate the
percentage coefficient of variation and conclude.

b. Build a Frequency Table for grouped data and find the mean, variance and standard deviation.

3. The salaries are in thousands of pesos of the employees of a company of Administrators that are
shown in the following table:

Table 2. Continuous Variable

Salario (miles de pesos) N° de empleados

50 - 55 4
55 – 60 9
60 – 65 12
65 – 70 15
70 – 75 4
75 – 80 6
∑ 50

Find the variance and standard deviation.

4. In the launch of a product, an investigation was carried out to determine the degree of acceptance,
using a scale of 10 points. 12 men and 12 women were taken with the following results

Men’s 7 5 6 9 10 8 7 4 5 7 3 10
Wome 6 4 4 3 5 6 8 6 5 5 4 6
n

Calculate:

a. The coefficient of variation, independent for men and women.

b. The coefficient of variation for the whole, that is, for the 24 people.

5. Arrange and solve a data exercise without grouping and another for grouped data applied to your
career where you calculate the dispersion measures seen.
