Remember:

y = x can be also written as f(x) = (x). y is the same as f(x) which is the range of the function.
f(x) can be read as ‘f of x’ which means function of x.

Examples:
y = 5x + 2 this can be written as f(x) = 5x + 2.
y = 200x4 + 356x2 – 4x + 25 this can be written as f(x) = 200x 4 + 356x2 – 4x + 25
