- founded on June 18, 1908
- the first state university in the country
UP Los Baños
- first autonomous (independent; self-governing)
campus
- one of the largest campuses in the Philippines
with roughly the size of the Manila City
- March 6, 1909, beginning of UP Los Baños as
College of Agriculture (UPCA) and became
the very first unit of the UP to open after the
war.
- April 19, 1910, the College of Forestry was
established.
- November 20, 1972, UPCA became a
University by virtue of Presidential Decree No.
58.
KEY BUILDINGS and LANDMARKS
1. SU-Student Union Building (TL)
- houses the Office of Student Affairs
- basement has a recreational hall with table
tennis, billiards and bowling facilities
- ground floor: houses the Learning Resource
Center (LRC), establishments such as 7-11
and SU Food Center
- 2nd floor: Office of the Director and other
divisions of OSA (Scholarship and Financial
Assistance, Student Organizations and
Activities, & Counselling and Testing)
including the International Student Services
and the Makiling Ballroom Hall,
Communication and Information Technology
(COMMIT). Also houses the offices of the
UPLB Perspective, University Student Council
and Textbook Exchange and Rental Center or
TERC, and the Student Disciplinary Tribunal
- Trivia: The pillars of the SU building resemble
the trunk of the kapok tree outside the
building.
2. Baker Hall (TL)
- Named after Dr. Charles Fuller Baker, the 2nd
dean of the College of Agriculture (former
name of UPLB).
- Among the facilities are indoor and outdoor
basketball, and tennis courts, archery range,
swimming pool, softball, diamond and soccer
field.
- Trivia: Former concentration camp during the
World War II
3. DMST-Dept. of Military Science and Tactics
(TL/M)
- Formerly the site of The Infirmary a.k.a.
University Health Service
- Coordinates the training for the reserve
officers.
4. Rizal Centenary Carillon Tower (TL/M)
- Music tower, creation of the late National Artist
for Architecture, Leandro V. Locsin.
- The soaring heights: yearning of the Filipino
youth.
- Subtle at the massy base: strength of the
foundation of the community deeply dedicated
in pursuit of learning.
- The spaces along the inflexible structure:
academic freedom encouraged in the
academe.
- The carillon has 37 bells of different sizes.
- Before: At 12 noon, the “UP Naming Mahal” is
played and at 6:00 pm “Jesus, Joy of Man’s
Desiring” and every quarter an hour is the
Westminster Chime.
- Trivia: (1) Some of the bells have been stolen
making it dysfunctional. (2) During
commencement exercises, the tower is
covered with maroon and green cloths
reminding the graduates to continue the
pursuit for knowledge and service to the
nation.
5. Copeland Gymnasium
- named after Dr. Edwin Bingham Copeland,
who recommended Los Baños as the
appropriate site for a school of agriculture and
negotiated with landowners, farmers and
kaingeros for the purchase of 72.63 hectares of
land at the foot of Mt. Makiling.
- houses the Department of Human Kinetics and
provides facilities for other sports and physical
education courses offered by the Department.
6. CVM- College of Veterinary Medicine (TL)
- the first veterinary school in the country, and
from 1920-1960, was the sole source of the
country’s veterinary manpower needs.
- CVM-UPLB was designated by the
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as
the Center of Excellence (COE) in veterinary
education in the Philippines.
7. IAS- Institute of Animal Science (TL)
- Started in 1909, one of the institutes of UPCA,
as the Department of Animal Husbandry.
- Has been designated as the Phil. Food,
Agriculture and Life Science and Research
Centers of Excellence.
8. IFST-Institute of Food Science and
Technology (TL)
- It is under the College of Agriculture.
- The Food Science Cluster (FSC) domain
includes instruction, research and extension in
the field of food science and food technology.
It deals with quality concerns at the interface
between the production and consumption of
food.
9. Agronomy, Horticulture, and Soil Science
Building (TL)
The Department of Soil Science is under the
Agricultural System Cluster while the
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture both
belongs to the Crop Science Cluster of the
College of Agriculture.
10. Old Agronomy (TL/M)
- Houses the farming systems and soil
resources institute.
- Mandated to lead in the development of
strategies that will promote the adoption of
technologies by the resource poor farmers.
11. CEAT-College of Engineering and Agro-
Industrial Technology and EE Building (TL)
- Composed of one institute (Institute of
Agricultural Engineering) and five departments
(Chemical Engineering, Agricultural
Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical
Engineering and Industrial Engineering).
- The Institute is designated by the Commission
on Higher Education (CHED) as a Center of
Excellence in Agricultural Engineering.
- Had its very first summa cum laude graduate
last 2011.
12. Seniors Social Garden (TL/M)
- Serves as venue for plays, concerts, wedding
receptions, and garden shows.
- Place where annual Los Baños Flower and
Garden Show is being held.
13. UPF-University Police Force (TL/M)
- Responsible in the security of the UPLB
community
14. Post Office (TL/M)
- Houses the mailing center of the UPLB
community
15. PhySci – Physical Sciences Building (TL)
- Houses the Institutes of Mathematical
Sciences and Physics (IMSP), Statistics
(INSTAT), Computer Science (ICS), and
Chemistry (IC)
16. Math Building (TL)
- Formerly Old Rural High School and Women’s
Dorm.
- Has been utilized by IMSP when the UP Rural
High School moved to its new location last
1999.
17. CAS Building (TL)
- Formerly and more popularly known as Hum
(hyoom). It houses the offices of the Dean and
the College Secretary.
- Trivia: Formerly the University’s main library,
post office and coop.
18. CAS Annex 1 (TL)
- Formerly known as New CAS or NCAS
Building
- Houses the Office of the University Registrar,
the Departments of Social Sciences and
Humanities and the Animal Biology Division.
19. CAS Annex 2 (TL)
- It was the Old Chemistry Building.
- Large classes are being conducted in
two multi-purpose halls within the
building (CAS MPH 1& 2)
- Trivia: It was converted into a new CAS
Annex building after a fire sometime in
the early 90's. The ruin left at the back
of the building was converted into an
amphitheater.
20. Oblation (TL/M)
- The original Oblation, made of concrete, was
recast in bronze in small town of Northern
Italy.
- Artist Napoleon Abueva, a student of
Guillermo Tolentino, replicated the sculpture.
- UPLB acquired its own Oblation only in 1983,
ten years after becoming the first autonomous
unit of the UP System.
- It symbolizes sacrifice and selfless offering of
oneself to the country nation. The concept was
derived from the second verse of Jose Rizal’s
Mi Ultimo Adios.
- Oblation’s height is 3.5 meters signifies the
350 years of Spanish rule in the Philippines.
You can notice that the right hand is instantly
advanced symbolizing motion and dynamism.
- A fig leaf covering his vital parts symbolizes
fertility.
- The life plant (katakataka) at his feet signifies
progress.
- Trivia: The original Oblation is now located at
the 3rd floor of the UP Main Library in Diliman.
- Trivia: It was modelled after UP Diliman
College of Fine Arts Professor Rodolfo Paras-
Perez’s assistant and student, Anastacio
Caedo and brother-in-law, Virgilio Raymundo.
Tolentino used Caedo’s physique and
Raymundo’s proportion.
21. CHE-College of Human Ecology (TL)
- The Institute of Human Ecology was elevated
to a college the same year UPLB acquired its
own Oblation.
- It has 3 departments: Human and Family
Development Studies, Community and
Environmental Resource Planning and Social
Development Services including one institute,
the Institute of Human Nutrition and Planning.
- Trivia: Formerly Entomology Building thus
there is a grasshopper in the arch.
Trivia: PALM DRIVE. The royal palm trees that
lined the main roads of the campus were
planted by an engineering class under Prof.
Cuzner in 1923.
22. Old Admin Building (TL/M)
- Also known as AG Samonte Building
- Now the College of Agriculture’s housing its
Dean and College Secretary. It also houses
the Office of Public Relations, Accounting,
Budget, Human Resource and Development,
Legal Office and Cash Division.
23. CDC-College of Development
Communication Building/Radyo DZLB (TL)
- The institute became a college in 1998 and
was recently awarded as one of the CHED
National Centers of Excellence in
Communication.
- It houses the University’s very own AM radio
station, Radyo DZLB 1116 kHz Ang Tinig ng
Kaunlaran.
- DZLB is the premier non-profit, non
commercial educational radio station in the
Philippines and has been awarded as the Best
AM Station by the Kapisanan ng mga
Brodkaster ng Pilipinas
- It reaches the whole Province of Laguna,
major parts of CALABARZON, Metro Manila
and some parts of the North up until Tarlac.

24. CEM-College of Economics and
Management (TL)
- Established in June 1919 as Department of
Rural Economics
- It was changed to Department of Agricultural
Economics under the College of Agriculture.
Later, it became the College of Development
Economics and Management and finally to its
present name, College of Economics and
Management.
- Composed of three Departments: Department
of Agricultural Economics (DAE),
the Department of Economics (DE) and
the Department of Agribusiness
Management (DAM)
25. BioSci- Biological Sciences Building (TL)
- Wing A- houses the Department of
Entomology (under CA), which was
established in 1909.
- Wing B- houses the Department of Plant
Pathology (under CA). It was established in
1917.
- Wing C- houses the Institute of Biological
Sciences. It offers BS Biology with majors in
Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology,
Genetics, Microbiology, Systematics, Wildlife
Biology and Zoology. Confirmed by CHED as
the Center of Excellence in Biology.
26. Main Library and Administration Building
(TL)
- The university library provides material and
services to meet the instructional, research
and extension needs of the various
constituents of the university. It also provides
free WiFi.
- The third floor now houses the offices of the
administration officials: Chancellor and Vice
Chancellors for Academic Affairs,
Administration, Research and Extension,
Planning and Development, and Community
Affairs.
- Trivia: Former SEARCA Building
27. Pegaraw – Philippine Pegasus (TL/M)
- The Philippine Pegasus is a winged tamaraw
according to former UP President Emil Q.
Javier.
- This symbol underscores the exponential take-
off, which the country had taken through the
centuries, as well as the country’s position of
leadership in applied sciences, earth sciences
and basic sciences.
- It stands on its hind legs, its fore legs curled in
and suspended in mid-air to dramatize the
impact of a kinetic force.
- The rightward upturn of the head carries in a
graphic and forceful language, the right and
uptrend direction, which are collectively taking.
- The tail is swung to the winged animal’s left
thigh to show that every part is active.
28. SEARCA – Southeast Asia Regional Center
for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture.
(TL/M)
- This was established by the Southeast Asian
Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO)
in 1966 primarily "to provide to the participating
countries high quality graduate study in
agriculture; promote, undertake, and coordinate
research programs related to the needs and
problems of the Southeast Asian region; and
disseminate the findings of agricultural research
and experimentation.
29. Dalambanga (TL/M)
- Was initially found in D.L. Umali Freedom
Park.
- Trivia: At one point, you would be confused
whether she’s holding the “banga” up on her
head down.
- Commonly known as ‘Mariang Banga’
30. DL Umali Hall (TL/M)
- Was named in honor of Dr. Dioscoro L. Umali,
former Dean of the UP College of Agriculture.
- The imposing building has a capacity of at
least 638 persons and is a frequent site of
convocations, conferences, plays, and other
cultural presentations.
- At the basement is the Sining Makiling Gallery
in which art exhibits are regularly mounted.
31. Thai Pavilion (TL/M)
- Also known as the Golden Jubilee Pavilion
- A gift of Thailand to the University. All the
materials including the workers are from
Thailand.
32. Japanese Garden (TL/M)
- Also known as the UPLB Nihon Koen
- Trivia: Last year, 2012, members of Japan
Development Assistance on Science and
Technology Human Resource Development in
the Philippines, UPLB faculty members, and
alumni who are former Japanese government
scholars took part in a tree planting ceremony
held at this garden.
33. CFNR - Forest Science Building (TL)
- The Forest Science Building houses three out
of five departments of the College of Forestry.
The Forest Biological Science (FBS), which
occupies the basement and the first floor of
the building, has a herbarium with more than
10,000 mounted specimens of trees, flowering
plants and ferns.
- The Institute of Renewable Natural Resources
occupies the second floor of the building. It
houses the college’s state of the art equipment
and facilities for resources management.
35. Makiling Botanical Garden (MBG) (TL)
- Established in 1963, MBG was developed to
support professional instruction and research
related to forestry and plant sciences and to
serve the needs of tourism as well as
educational and recreational needs of the
general public.
- The MBG has a pavilion and a swimming pool
available for recreational and social activities
for its visitors.
- It also serves as a sanctuary for endangered
and rare plant species in the country. It
features a dipterocarp forest and nature trails,
as well as the Molawin and Marulas creeks.
36. CFNR Administration Hall (TL)
- Houses the offices of the Dean, Associate
Dean and the College Secretary. The building
also houses the Forestry Development Center
(FDC), Institute of Agro-Forestry (IAF),
Environmental Forestry program (EnFor) and
others.

34. Museum of Natural History (TL)

- A center of documentation and repository of
biological specimens for scientific references.
- It has more than 200,000 biological collections
of Philippine plants, animals, microorganisms
and others.
- The following are the sections found in the
area: entomological section (insects & mites),
zoological & wildlife (fishes, birds, mammals,
reptiles and corals); Botanical Herbarium
(preserved plants); Hortorium ; Mycological
Herbarium and Microbiological Culture
section.
- The center also provides exhibits and gives
lectures/seminars to students, visitors and the
like.
