INST RUCT IONS T O CANDIDAT ES :

1. Attempt any FIVE question(s), ea ch que stion ca rrie s 6 ma rks .

1) Orange plants were placed in garden overnight in sky at temperature of 260 K. The
temperature of air is 284 K. The convective heat transfer coefficient is 1.65 W/m2 – K. The
leaves of the plant have emissivity of 0.65, Find the temperature of the orange plant leaves
under equilibrium conditions.

2) A 10 cm outer diameter pipe carrying saturated steam at a temperature of 195C is lagged

to 20 cm diameter with magnesia and further lagged with laminated asbestos to 25 cm
diameter. The entire pipe is further protected by a layer of canvas. If the temperature under
the canvas is 20°C, find the mass of steam condensed in 8 hrs on a 100m length of pipe and
interface temperature. Take thermal conductivity of magnesia as 0.07 W/m – K and that of
asbestos as 0.082 W/m – k. Neglect the thermal conductivity of the pipe material. The latent
heat of steam for given conditions can be taken as 1951 kJ/kg–K.

3) A steel shaft of 20 cm diameter is subjected to heat treatment in a furnace at 927°C and

with a convection coefficient of 80 W/m2 – k. The initial temperature of the shaft is 27°C.
Find the time consumed in achieving a center line temperature of 627°C. Take :
 = 7854 kg/m3, k = 48.8 W/m – k, cp = 559 J/kg – K for shaft material.

4) In an experiment to find the thermal conductivity, a metallic rod of diameter 25 mm is

placed in a furnace such that its one half is inserted into the furnace and other half is
projected out in a room at 300 K. Once the steady state reached, the temperatures measured
between two points 76 mm apart were 399 K and 364 K, respectively. Taking a convection
coefficient of 22.7 W/m2 – K, find the thermal conductivity of the metal.

5) A vehicle carrying refrigeration box is moving with a speed of 24 m/s on a road with
ambient temperature of 323 K. The dimensions of box are 3 m(H) × 4 m (W) × 10 m (L).
Assume a wall temperature of 283 K and air flow is parallel to the longest side of the box.
Neglecting the heat loss from the front side and backside of the box, calculate heat loss
from four surfaces. For flow over flat surfaces use

Nu = 0.036(Re)0.8(Pr)1/3

The properties of air at bulk mean temperature are :

 = 1.165 kg/m3, Pr = 0.701, cp = 1005 J/kg – K,  = 16 × 10 –6m2/s

6) In a shell and tube heat exchanger, tubes are 4m long, 31 mm outer diameter and 27 mm
inner diameter. Water is heated from 295 K to 318 K by condensing steam at 100 °C on the
outside of the tubes Water flow rate through the tubes is 10 kg/s. Heat transfer on steam
side is 5500 W/m2 – K and on water side is 850 W/m2 – K, Neglecting all other resistances,
find the number of tubes.

7) The temperature of a body of area 0.1 m2 is 900 K. Calculate the total rate of energy
emission, intensity of normal radiation in W/m2 – sr, maximum monochromatic emissive
power and the wavelength at which occurs.

8) Three thin walled long circular cylinders 1, 2, 3 of diameters 15 cm ( = 0.05), 25 cm

( = 0.1), and 35 cm ( = 0.2) respectively are arranged concentrically. Temperature of
cylinder 1 is 80 K and that of cylinder 3 is 300 K. Assuming that there is vacuum inside
annular spaces, determine the steady state temperature attained by cylinder 2.
