Power Possessed by an Object
Power is defined as the rate of doing work or the work/time
ratio. Mathematically, it is defined as:

where P is the power in watts (W) or joules/sec (J/s), W is the

work done in Newton meter (N•m), and t is time in seconds.
One watt is equivalent to 1 N⋅m / s.
Recall that, W = Fd . The equation for power may also take the
form

where F is the force in newtons (N), d is the displacement in

meters (m), and t is time in seconds.
Power is also expressed in horsepower (hp). One
horsepower is 746 watts. Horsepower is commonly
found in air-conditioning units, generators, and other
large appliances and equipment.
Power is defined as the rate of doing work or
the work/time ratio.
In a 100 meter run, the first finisher consumed 140 J in 35
seconds. Calculate the power of the first finisher.
In a 100 meter run, the first finisher consumed 140 J in 35
seconds. Calculate the power of the first finisher.

Step 1: Identify what is required to find in the problem.

You are asked to calculate for the power (P) of the first finisher.
In a 100 meter run, the first finisher consumed 140 J in 35
seconds. Calculate the power of the first finisher.

Step 2: Identify the given in the problem.

The amount of work consumed by the finisher and the time in

seconds are given.
In a 100 meter run, the first finisher consumed 140 J in 35
seconds. Calculate the power of the first finisher.

Step 3: Write the working equation.

In a 100 meter run, the first finisher consumed 140 J in 35
seconds. Calculate the power of the first finisher.

Step 4: Substitute the given values.

In a 100 meter run, the first finisher consumed 140 J in 35
seconds. Calculate the power of the first finisher.

Step 5: Find the answer.

Therefore, the power consumed by the first finisher is 4 W.

In solving for unknown quantities, remember to:

● Check for the consistency of units; and

● Isolate the unknown quantity on one side of the equation
before substituting the given values.
1 Power is the rate of doing work.

The unit of power is equivalent to Joules per seconds

2 (J/s) or Watts (W).

Power is dependent of the work done on the object

3 per time interval.

An increase to the work done by an object or to an

4 object will also result to an increase of its power.
Write T if the given statement is true and if it is false,
underline the incorrect word/s and write the corresponding
correct word/s for it.

1. The unit for power is J/s or W.

2. Power is dependent on the work done on it.
3. Power is the rate of exerting force per time interval.
4. Power is not zero if there is no work done on the object.
5. Power is equivalent to force times the distance the object
traveled at a certain time interval.
