(a) Figure 1(a) shows the instrumentation amplifier configuration. Answer the following
questions:
(i) Discuss the purpose of instrumentation amplifier.
(2 marks)
(ii) Determine the voltage gains of op-amps A1 and A2.
(2 marks)
(iii) Determine the overall voltage gain of that amplifier configuration.
(1 mark)
(iv) Determine the final output voltage if Vin1 = 3 mV and Vin2 = 15 mV.

(a) With the aid of suitable diagrams, discuss the following terms as applied to an
operational amplifier.
(i) Double-ended differential input
(ii) Common-mode input
(iii) Slew rate

(b) Figure 2(a) shows the ideal op-amp. Answer the following questions:
(i) State the type of op-amp configuration shown in Figure 2(a).
(1 mark)

(ii) Determine the value of input current, Iin.

(2 marks)

(iii) Determine the value of output voltage, Vout.

(2 marks)

(iv) Determine the value of closed-loop gain, ACL.

Question 3

Figure 3(a) shows an integrator circuit. Beginning in Position 1, the switch is thrown into Position 2
and held there for 20 ms, then back to Position 1 for 20 ms, and so forth. Its initial value is 0 V and the
saturated output levels of the op-amp are ±12 V.

(a) Determine the rate of change of the output voltage when the switch is in Position 1 and
Position 2.

(b) Determine the output voltage of the op-amp circuit.

(2 marks)

(c) Sketch and label the resulting output waveform in response to the step input.
