Second Conditional– uses the past simple after ‘if’, then would and the infinitive.
If + past simple,… would + verb
Second conditional has two uses:
1. Use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true..
Examples:
a. If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.
b. If met the Queen of England I would shake hands with her.
2. Use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it is not true.
Examples:
a. If I had his number I would call him. ( I don’t have his number now)
b. If I were you, I wouldn’t go out with that man. ( I am not her)
Second conditional talks about things that is unlikely to happen it is subjective it depends upon
someone’s point of view, whereas first conditional describes things that are likely to happen in the near
future. We use second conditional when we want to talk about an imaginary or impossible situation.
Directions: Read the following carefully and answer the exercises with accuracy.
Complete the given sentences below showing second conditionals.

Underline the correct form of the verb in expressing an argument.
Examples:
1.If he had talked to me, I would have listened to him.(but he didn’t talked to me)
2.If it rained last weekend we would have stayed home.(but it didn’t stayed home)
3. If the student had listened to the teacher carefully, he would have answered the questions easily.(but
he didn’t listened)
