Concept Notes:

Chemistry is the study of matter energy, and the changes they undergo.
Chemistry is basic tool used extensively in the fields of ecology, agriculture, engineering,
photography, metallurgy, nutrition, medicine, dentistry and many others.

Chemistry is a body of systematized knowledge gained from observation, study and experimentation.

By studying chemistry you will be able to understand the nature of the materials around you and the
changes they undergo.

Role of Chemistry in Society and Industry

Studying chemistry has many social benefits:

 Food
 Clothing
 Building materials
 Medicine

That are the necessary in our daily life are products of the application of chemical knowledge. Many of
the materials used in such fields as:
 Architecture
 Engineering
 Nuclear science

The results of the work of chemists. Without these and other innovations our ways of life would be
radically different.
Contribution of Chemistry to Other Sciences

Chemistry involves a broad scope of both intellectual and experimental activities. Various
opportunities exist for those who wish to pursue career in chemistry as a chemist, chemical engineer or
chemical laboratory technician.

Chemical engineers are chemists with engineering training. They concerned usually with large scale
industrial processes.

Biochemist are responsible for the research on the detection of the life span of living organisms
that affect the body chemistry and the response to good health and nutrition.
Industrial chemists provide information on the manufacture of construction materials such as plasters,
synthetics, gravel and sand, cement wood, etc.

Environmental chemists take care of our environment while agricultural chemists are involved in
the study of agricultural products like rice, corn, vegetables, meat poultry and livestock's.
Food chemists test food quality and also make chemicals that help food from spoiling.

Research is an on- going process in all sciences. Because of chemical research will continue to make
valuable contribution contributions to human progress.

Chemical research promises a brighter and productive future for all. To be a chemist is to be an
architect of the future.

One of the major tasks of a chemist is using facts to build models or provide explanations to predict
future observations

Another is testing models and explanations. Testing serves to confirm the validity of scientific
concepts.

Perform the Alphabet Activity, list as many chemistry related discoveries as you know. Examples: A for
antacids, B for bone marrow transplants, C for cars and so on. Select five discoveries in your list and tell
how these have benefited people and the risks that people get from them.

Discoveries Benefits/Uses
A Artificial sweetener  Used in processed foods, including: Soft drinks, powdered
drink mixes and other beverages. Baked goods. Candy.
B Batteries  Used to power things like remote controls, torch, wall
clock, flashlight, hearing aids, weight scales, etc.
Rechargeable batteries are also used in various
devices like digital cameras, mobile phones, batteries
of vehicles, video game devices, remote control cars,
home maintenance tools, and many more.
C Caffeine • Used by mouth or rectally in combination with painkillers
(such as aspirin and acetaminophen) and a chemical called
ergotamine for treating migraine headaches. It is also used
with painkillers for simple headaches and preventing and
treating headaches after epidural anesthesia..
D Dye  Used to impart color to textiles, paper, leather, and other
materials such that the colouring is not readily altered by
washing, heat, light, or other factors to which the material is
likely to be exposed.
E Electric light bulb  Used in lighting the houses, the car lights & the torches,
street lamps, at bus stops, in parking lots and at the gas
station.
F First vaccine  Used for treating diseases
G Gun powder  Used as a propellant in firearms, artillery, rocketry, and
pyrotechnics, including use as a blasting agent for
explosives in quarrying, mining, and road building.
Gunpowder is classified as a low explosive because of its
relatively slow decomposition rate and consequently low
brisance.
H Haber-Bosch process  Used in the manufacturing of ammonia from nitrogen and
hydrogen, and then goes on to explain the reasons for the
conditions used in the process.
I Insulin  Used in the treatment of people with type 1 diabetes and
type 2 diabetes.
J Juice  Used as an ingredient or flavoring in foods or other
beverages.
K Keflex  Used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This
medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic.
L LCD Screen  Used for portable electronic games, as viewfinders for
digital cameras and camcorders, in video projection
systems, for electronic billboards, as monitors for
computers, and in flat-panel televisions.
M Mayonnaise  Used on sandwiches, as a base for dressings, as a dip, or
even for various beauty treatments. Mayonnaise can be
used in the hair for a variety of reasons, such as
conditioning and head lice treatment. Also can be used as a
facial cleanser, and treat sunburns.
N Nylon  Used as Clothing – Shirts, Foundation garments, lingerie,
raincoats, underwear, swimwear and cycle wear.
-Industrial uses – Conveyer and seat belts, parachutes,
airbags, nets and ropes, tarpaulins, thread, and tents.
O Omeprazole  Used to allow the esophagus to heal and prevent further
damage to the esophagus in adults and children 1 year of
age and older with GERD.
P Penicillin V potassium  Used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as
pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections, scarlet
fever, and ear, skin, gum, mouth, and throat infections.
Q Quicklime  Used for production of iron and steel, paper and pulp
production, treatment of water and flue gases and in the
mining industry.
R Rabeprazole  Used to reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. It's
used for heartburn, acid reflux and gastro-oesophageal
reflux disease (GORD) – GORD is when you keep getting
acid reflux. Rabeprazole is also taken to prevent and treat
stomach ulcers.
S Salicylic acid  Used to treat skin conditions that involve scaling or
overgrowth of skin cells such as psoriasis (a skin disease in
which red, scaly patches form on some areas of the body),
ichthyoses (inborn conditions that cause skin dryness and
scaling), dandruff, corns, calluses, and warts.
T Tea tree oil  Used to treat acne, athlete's foot, lice, nail fungus and insect
bites.
U Ultracet  Used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. It
contains 2 medications: tramadol and acetaminophen.
V Vinegar  Used to clean your microwave; remove grease; remove
mold, mildew, and mineral deposits; clean carpeting; as a
furniture polish; remove stains on clothing; remove crayon
marks; clean stainless steel; clean window blinds; remove
copper and brass tarnish; clean glass; and use it as a CD
cleaner.
W Wine  Used for preventing heart disease and stroke, preventing
decline of thinking skills in later life, diabetes, preventing a
digestive tract infection that can lead to ulcers, and many
other conditions.
X Xylocaine jelly  Used to prevent and relieve pain during certain medical
procedures (such as inserting a tube into the urinary tract).
It is also used to numb the lining of the mouth, throat, or
nose before certain medical procedures (such as intubation).
Y Yakult  Used to improve digestion and helps build immunity
Z Zonrox  Used to remove tough stains, odors, and 99.9% of germs
you don't see. Zonrox cleans deeper than just the surface,
fighting disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can
be found anywhere.
