Concept Note

Sometimes, you must find the mean of a data set in which not all values are equally represented. The type of mean that considers an
additional factor is called the weighted mean.

Find the weighted mean of a variable X by multiplying each value by its corresponding weight and dividing the sum of the products by
the sum of the weights.

w 1 x 1+ w2 x2 +…+ wn x n ∑ wx
x= = , where w 1 , w 2 , … w n are the weights and x 1 , x 2 , … x n are the values.
w1 + w2 +…+ wn ∑w
Example:
Grade Point Average A student received an A in English Composition I (3 credits), a C in Introduction to Psychology (3 credits), a
B in Biology I (4 credits), and a D in Physical Education (2 credits). Assuming A=4 grade points, B=3 grade points, C=2 grade
points, D=1 grade point, and F=0 grade points, find the student’s grade point average.

Solution:

Course
English Composition I
Credits (w)
3
Grade (x)
A (4 points) x=
∑ wx = 3 ( 4 ) +3 ( 2 ) +4 ( 3 ) +2(1) = 32 =2.7
Introduction to Psychology 3 B (2 points) ∑w 3+3+4 +2 12
Biology I 4 C (3 points)
Physical Education 2 D (1 point) The grade point average is 2.7.

Activity 1:
(Copy and answer the exercises on a long bond paper.)
Answer the following problems:
1. Fat Grams. Using the weighted mean, find the average number of grams of fat per ounce of meat or fish that a person would
consume over a 5-day period if he ate these:

Meat or fish Fat (g/oz)

3 oz fried shrimp 3.33
3 oz veal cutlet (broiled) 3.00
2 oz roast beaf 2.50
2.5 oz fried chicken drumstick 4.40
4 oz tuna (canned in oil) 1.75

2. Costs of Helicopters. The costs (in dollars) of three models of helicopters are shown here. Find the weighted mean of the costs of the
models.

Model Number sold Cost

Sunscraper 9 427,000
Skycoaster 6 365,000
High-flyer 12 725,000

Learning Objective : The learners will be able to find the median and mode for grouped data

Concept Note
Steps in finding the MEDIAN for grouped data:
1. Construct cumulative frequency ( F ¿ by copying the frequency of the last step. Add the frequency going up
n
2. Get the half ( )
2
n n
3. Subtract the cumulative frequency ( F ) from the half sum . Take note that the F should not exceed the .
2 2
4. Find L, lower boundary of the median class

( )
n
−F
5. Use the formula ~ 2
x=L+ i
f
Example:
Solution:

( )
Class f <CF n 20 n
= =10 −F
36 – 40 2 20 2 2 ~ 2
31 – 35 3 18 x=L+ i
26 – 30 4 15 L=20.5 f

( )

Median class 21 – 25 5 11
~
x=20.5+ 5
16 – 20 3 6 F=6 5
11 – 15 2 3
4
()
6 – 10 1 1 f =5 ~
x=2 0.5+ 5
n=20 5
i=5

For grouped data, the MODE may be computed using the Moments of Force Method.

The formula for Moments of Where:

Force Method is: x^ =mode of grouped dat a
l=lower boundary of the modal clas s
^x =l+i
( di
d 1+ d 2 ) i=interva l
d i=difference between the frequency of the modal class∧the class below¿
d 2=difference between the frequency of the modal class∧the class above¿
Example:
Solution:
Class f
36 – 40
31 – 35
26 – 30

^x =l+i ( di
d 1+ d 2 )
