LESSON PLAN
in
MATHEMATICS 8
1ST QUARTER SY 2023-2024
AUGUST 29, 2023
I. OBJECTIVE:
a. Factors completely polynomials with common monomial factor.
b. M8AL-Ia-b-1
c. KBI: Validates feelings and emotions.

II. CONTENTS AND LEARNING RESOURCES:

a. Topic: Factoring polynomials with common monomial factor.
b. References:
- SLM page 2
c. Materials/Equipment:
- Marker and Whiteboard

III. PROCEDURES:
a. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
 Remind students to observe Safety and Health Protocols all the time, as well as the rules and
mechanics of instruction of the new normal F2F class.
 Checking of Attendance
 Greetings and brief self-introduction
 Facilitate Psychosocial Support activity (Emphasize the KBI, but KBI should be observed all
the time)
b. Drill: Let the student do multiplication.
c. Review: Ask the students:
a. What is factoring?
b. How will you factor a number?
c. What is a greatest common factor? How to find the greatest common factor?
d. Motivation: Try to analyze.
If 3 times 4 can also be written as 3(4) = 12, and
3(x) = 3x,
3(y) = 3y,
x(y) = xy,
3(3) = 32 = 9,
x(x) = x2,
y(y) = y2,
then, what will be the factors of 12, 3x, 3y, xy, 9, x 2, y2?
e. Presentation of the lesson:
a. Present the objective of the day.
b. Activity 1: Identify the common term of each polynomial through prime factorization.

1. 2ab + 2ac – 2a
Ans. 2a
2
2. 20x – 12
Ans. 4
3. x(a-b) + y(a-b)
Ans. (a-b)
Ask the following:
 What are the factors of each term?
 What is the common factor?
 How did you identify the common factor?
f. Discussion:
The teacher will discuss this statement.

Common monomial factoring is the process of writing a polynomial as a product of two

polynomials, one of which is a monomial that factors each term of the polynomial.

Every expression has itself and the number 1 as a factor. These are called the trivial factors.
If a monomial is the product of two or more variables or numbers, then it will have factors
other than itself and 1.

Examples: (Use the given polynomials from the previous activity)

g. Activities:
Activity 2: Match it to me!

Instructions: Match the polynomial in column A to its factors in column B.

A. B.

1. x3y2 +xy3 + 2x2y3 a. xy2(x2 + y + 2xy)

Ans. a
2. x3 + x2y + xy2 b. 3(y2 – 5y – 4)
Ans. c
3. 3y2 – 15y – 12 c. xy(x2 + x + y)
Ans. b

Teacher will discuss how the factors of the polynomials obtain.

h. Application:
Activity 3:
The sum of the ages of a mother and daughter is 39. The mother is 3 years younger
than the square of the daughter’s age. How old is the mother and the daughter?
i. Generalization:
Guide Questions for Generalization:
• What is a polynomial?
(Expected answer: Polynomial is an expression of one or more algebraic terms.)
• How can we obtain the factors of polynomials using common monomial factor?
(Expected answer: through the GCF.)
• What concepts have you learned from factoring that can be applied in your daily
living? (Answers may vary)

IV. EVALUATION:
Factor completely the following polynomials with common monomial factor.
Choose only 2 out of the 4 given items to answer.

1. 5y2 + 10 Ans. 5(y 2 + 2)

2. 14p2 + 21 Ans. 7(2p 2 + 3)
3. 3xy + 9xyz Ans. 3xy (1 + 3z)
4. X4 + x2y + x3y2 ans. x2 (x2 + y + xy2)

V. HOMEWORK/ASSIGNMENT:
