ES 205 Assignment – Exercise 3.1

Using mynewton on the function 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 5 − 7, with x0 = 2 and by trial and error we obtained
n=6, as 6 is the lowest value of n which the x stops changing in the program.

The program results to x = 1.475773161594552 at n=6 to infinity.

By simple algebra we obtained the true value of x. x= √7 = 1.475773162.
1.475773162.− 1.475773161594552
% Error = = 4.06× 10−9
1.475773162

Residual error = rn = f(xn) = (1.475773161594552)5 – 7 = 0

As a result, the error is approximately 0 and the residual error is zero.
