Control of fire onboard:

 Fires on board ships can be prevented by finding and rectifying leakages of fuel oil,
lubricating oil, and exhaust gases.
 In a ship's generator room, the biggest danger of fire is from a leaky high pressure fuel
pipe.
 The best way to deal with fires on board ships is to prevent them rather than letting them
occur. Breaking out of fire in a place where no fire exist is called “ignition”, whereas “flash” is
a term used for fire eruption in a new place as a result of flames from an existing fire in a
nearby place (the ignition source).
 Using proper utilization of as

a) Flame detectors

Light produced by a flame has a characteristic flicker frequency of about 25Hz. The
spectrum in the infra-red or ultra violet range can be monitored to give an alarm. Oil
fires generally do not give off much smoke and this type of sensor is preferred,
especially near fuel handling equipment or boilers to give an early warning.

b) Heat detectors

Heat detectors are of various types such as rate of rise type, which has bi-metallic type
detecting elements – a thick strip and a thin strip. The thin strip is more sensitive to
temperature rise than the thicker one.  If there is a sudden rise in temperature, the thin
one bends faster than the thicker one, bringing both of them in contact.

c) Smoke detectors

5. Bridge: The ship's bridge is the commanding station of a ship.

It controls the ship movement through its navigational equipment.
It controls important deck machinery, main engine and ship's navigation
system.

DG Cargo Identification:
Identification seeks for dangerous goods to be assigned to UN/ID numbers and
proper shipping names according to their hazard classification and their composition.
The process for selecting the proper shipping name for articles and substances is set in
the hazardous material regulations.

1 Proper shipping name (it is assigned by the United Nations Committee of Experts
for the Transport of Dangerous.
2 CAS number is a unique numerical identifiers for chemical elements
(CAS=Chemical Abstracts Service is a division of.
3 UN number is a four digit number assigned by the United Nations to identify
dangerous goods.

1. EmS means 'Emergency Response Procedures for Ships Carrying Dangerous

Goods (EmS Guide) and EmS codes are assigned to each UN Number in
column 15 of Dangerous Goods List in IMDG Code chapter 3.2. ... EmS tables
are published in supplement to IMDG Code.

Check When Loading Cargo: While loading the IMDG cargo,

following things must be checked:
2. Check the stowage plan and store the package as per the same.
3. No bunkering is going on or stopped during the time of loading.
4. The radar is put off, applicable for certain cargoes.
5. Check the packaging is weather tight.

 Crude oil tanker ship: These types of vessels are bigger in size; e.g. VLCC tanker or
ULCC tanker and are used to carry a large amount of unrefined crude oil from one port to
another. They mainly transfer the unrefined product from the source to the refineries.
 Product tanker ship: This type of vessel is mainly used to transport refined oil. They are
smaller in size as compared to crude oil tankers.

 Flammability:
 Class of Cargoes are identified upon its intensity or toxicity.
 Ventilator: Ventilation on ships as in land buildings comprises a network of ducts
through which air is forced by fans. It is not essential or desirable that there is a
single ventilation system and it is important that parts can be shut off as required
for a variety of purposes. Ventilation is covered in SOLAS in many aspects. As
