PROJECT(Dec)
CAPSTONE PROJECT
• Select 1 Location in the Philippines
• Select 1 to 3 Energy source to use (Single or hybrid)
• Identify energy source parameters (Resource Assessment)
• Identify load requirements (Survey, research)
• Identify power plant requirements (Sizing, operation characteristics)
• Identify economic parameters (feasibility)
Course goals
1. Be able to identify and differentiate various energy sources
2. Be able to determine process to covert raw energy sources to ready
to use electricity
3. Be able to determine load requirements required for sizing a plant
4. Be able to provide general power plant parameters and plan its
operation
5. Be able to present an economic study and feasibility of the plant
using the resource

Energy
Energy is everywhere
Energy
We use energy more than what we think
Energy
We use more and more Energy as time pass by
Energy
But we never dig dip into it until now
Energy
And somehow we never cared about side effects
until now
Energy
• A fundamental entity of nature that is transferred between parts of a
system in the production of physical change within the system and
usually regarded as the capacity to do work
• Expressed usually in Joules or kWh
• PE = m*g*h
• KE = ½ mv2
Types of Energy
• Renewable Energy – Energy source is constantly replenished
• Solar
• Wind
• Tidal
• Hydro
• Biomass
• Non Renewable Energy – Energy source would take years to
replenish
• Fossil Fuel
• Nuclear
• Natural Gas
Energy Conversion
• THE PROCESS OF CHANGING ONE FORM OF ENERGY INTO ANOTHER.
Energy Conversion
• ELECTRICAL TO RADIANT • CHEMICAL TO THERMAL
• ELECTRICAL TO SOUND • MECHANICAL TO ELECTRICAL
• RADIANT TO CHEMICAL • CHEMICAL TO ELECTRICAL
• CHEMICAL TO MECHANICAL • POTENTIAL TO KINETIC
• SOLAR TO ELECTRIC • THERMAL TO ELECTRICAL
• SOLAR TO THERMAL • CHEMICAL TO SOUND
Short Exercise
• ELECTRICAL TO RADIANT • CHEMICAL TO THERMAL
• ELECTRICAL TO SOUND • MECHANICAL TO ELECTRICAL
• RADIANT TO CHEMICAL • CHEMICAL TO ELECTRICAL
• CHEMICAL TO MECHANICAL • POTENTIAL TO KINETIC
• SOLAR TO ELECTRIC • THERMAL TO ELECTRICAL
• SOLAR TO THERMAL • CHEMICAL TO SOUND
1. Coal 8. Hydro
2. Oil/Diesel 9. Tidal
3. Natural Gas 10. Wind
4. Biomass 11. Solar
5. Nuclear (fission-materials) 12. Vibration
6. Nuclear (fusion-materials) 13. Ocean Thermal
7. Geothermal
ASSESSMENT 1 - SUMMATIVE
Choose an energy source based on the lecture on Sept 9, 2020. Create a power
point presentation. On the notes section of the power point, place your
discussions.
• The presentation should cover the following:
• 1. All About the energy resource (Where can it be found, what is its function in
the earth, what is it used for conventionally, its chemical composition if there is
any, etc.)
• 2. Historical back ground or the time line of events from when it was discovered.
• 3. How will it be used as a source of electricity? What processes will it undergo
• 4. How much percent of it is available worldwide and in the Philippines? Give
examples of existing facilities in the Philippines that use this resource for energy.
• 5. How will the resource be assessed? Give at least two procedures to do
resource assessment of the chosen resource.
QUIZ 1
The presentation should range from 20 - 50 slides and the discussions should
be more than 1000 words.
Grading system:
• Presentation - 40% (animation, text, presentation content, visibility etc)
• Content - 60% (Discussion content, presentation content)
Note that this is mostly a research activity. place your references in lower
left. For discussions, avoid copy paste. you must write what you understand
and what you want your reader to understand.
