Independent Cadet Joint Association

Welcome/Chairman's Message
On behalf of the ICJA Executive Command and the
Commanding Officers/Corps Commanders of
all our member organizations, I welcome you to the
July issue of our publication, The Association
Guard.
While the pandemic has set back many of our plans, we still remain vigilant in
putting forth our best efforts to create a world-class organization to promote the
best interests and efficient operation of our member organizations, as well as
the personal development, advocacy and safety of all the individual Adult
Volunteers and cadets in each organization. To this end, we are now seeking to
register as a Company, so that we may be able to access grants on behalf of
member organizations and enforce the rules that we had agreed upon in our
Constitution. Another of our immediate initiatives is to create a set of
recognized cadet academic certifications/qualifications based on regular cadet
training, so that cadets may be able to leave school with a Diploma in
Leadership, Teamwork and Community Development (equivalent to 4 or 5
subjects), merely by participating in cadet training and passing the required
exams/training activities. You can find out more about this and other plans and
initiatives in the pages to come.
Take care, and may you be guided by our mottos, “Raising Standards to
Exceed Expectations”, and “United through Youth: Inspiring Together,
Serving the Future.”

Did You Know?
• Did you know that Jamaica has the best performing stock
market in the entire world?
Instead of borrowing money to do business or
expand, big companies invite people to buy
imaginary shares of the company called stocks.
When companies make profits, they pay a
fraction of their profits (called ‘dividends’) every
3 months, 6 months, or every year, to people
who bought stocks (‘shareholders’) at a ratio
proportionate to the amount of stocks they
bought. In this way, shareholders can pay for
stocks once and keep earning money
‘dividends’ over time.
• Did you know that the word ‘cadet’ means ‘a young military
Officer in training?
Cadets started out as trainee officers for
the Reserve Army in Britain in 1859 when
France threatened to invade. The
Cadet Force was used to produce
officers fresh out of high schools and
colleges in the two World Wars. The
practice was discontinued after WW11,
and cadetting was kept around for its
positive effect on moulding youth.
• Did you know that not all military uniformed personnel are
actually soldiers?
* Soldiers are military men/women who fight on
land to defend or conquer territory, and are
members of an Army. * Military men who fight on
the sea or underwater from ships and submarines
are called sailors, and are members of a Navy. *
Airmen provide combat support, surveillance and
power projection/aggression from the air, and
monitor cyberspace security. They are members
21
of an Air Force. * Marines are trained to fight both
on land and at sea at a moment’s notice, and
pave the way for soldiers to occupy a position.
