Target audience: Reporting to health professionals and parents of young children

Objectives: 1. After the presentation, viewers will be able to explain the role of vitamin D and

identify one food source with 90% accuracy.

2. Following the presentation, viewers will be able to recall health outcomes of vitamin d in

children with 95% accuracy.

Time Allotted: 20-25 minutes

Preassessment: Question the audience on functions of vitamin D and food sources.

Content:

1. Begin with an interesting fact related to vitamin d (sunlight exposure and sunscreen)

2. Briefly explain vitamin D testing as it relates to RDN practices as well as to other health

professionals.

3. Acknowledge how vitamin D is important for the viewer and what health conditions too

high or too low concentrations can lead to.

4. Examine various food sources and show a milk carton here as visual and explain.

5. Present a table displaying the recommended amounts, focusing on the age group 1-13 y/o

6. Dive into research study #1: Explain vitamin D3 supplementation and how results show it

can positively affect fasting glucose, waist circumference, total body fat, and lower blood

pressure

7. Go into research study #2: How much vitamin D intake from food is required to maintain

a healthy vitamin D status, results show the recommended 400 IU is needed and relates to

lean body mass and physical activity in children.

8. Break from the studies, show an image of a creative collage


9. Study #3: Focuses on prenatal programming of vitamin D supplementation and how later

on it can benefit a child’s metabolism and lower risk for disease.

10. Study #4: Looks at milk types and how whole milk vs 1% leads to increase or decrease in

vitamin D levels in children.

11. Study #5 (Last one): Examines vitamin D levels in children who live in darker areas with

less exposure to sunlight. Also identifies proper serum 25(OH)D concentrations for these

children based on research.

Evaluation: Evaluate the participants ability to explain the role of vitamin D, identify one

vitamin D food source, and recall health outcomes.
