The Fire Marshall visited Clay County High School in early Spring 2020. The Fire

Marshall found 10 violations. The first violation was the business and computer classroom had

an overhead projector using two extension cords. The breezeway was missing an exit sign. One

science classroom did not have outlet coverings in the floor. All rooms that had curtains covering

the window panes needed to be flame retardant. The Biology classroom had an extension cord

that needed removed. The computer lab did not have covers on the outlets. The stairwells needed

magnets on the doors. The auditorium was missing a light switch cover. Ceiling tiles needed

replaced in the sound room in the auditorium. The double wooden doors in the auditorium were

not latching correctly.

The health inspections came back with mold in a few of the classrooms in the vocational

building. The classrooms were shut down and had a full deep cleaning. The areas that the mold

was found in within the classroom were checked in other rooms to ensure that they were mold

free as well.

Building maintenance is currently a huge undertaking at CCHS. Clay County Schools

received funding from the School Building Authority to remodel the high school. The entire high

school is under a two year construction project. The school is receiving all new air conditioning

units, a new gymnasium, a new commons area, all new electrical, new bathrooms, new doors and

windows, and a new entrance for parents. This project is happening during school, so many
teachers are being displaced from their classrooms. This project is long overdue. The last time

that the high school was updated was in the 70s when it was built.

One of my recommendations is that all teachers have a list of requirements for their

classroom. For example, on the list, teachers will know that they cannot use extension cords in

their classroom and that all outlets must be covered. I feel as though it is important for staff to be

aware of what they can and cannot have before it becomes a violation.
