Standard Summary

Standard 9: Operations and Management

“Effective educational leaders manage school operations and resources to promote each student’s

academic success and well-being.” This standard was met by participating in the following

activities.

 Standard Activity 9.37A: For this activity, I examined operational policies for Clay

County High School. The policy book I examined dated back to 1976. It was tedious to

go through each policy, but I pulled out and expanded upon the ones that I felt were most

beneficial to operations.

 Standard Activity 9.38A: For this activity, I read and summarized the findings and

violations found by the State Fire Marshall. The high school did relatively well, but there

were things such as extension cords and outlet covers that needed fixed.

 Standard Activity 9.41C: During this activity, I interviewed the assistant superintendent

about finance for Clay County Schools. During the interview we discussed levy money

and how that is applied, the School Building Authority money that has funded the high

school project, and finally how a small county stays in budget.

Key Learnings from the Experience

From this experience, I learned that the county has had to learn to be very resourceful

when deciding how money is spent. They have learned how to stretch money and cut corners

where it is needed. This experience also showed me that the Fire Marshall is a very important

visitor that can cost the county a lot of money if major violations are found.
Area(s) Needing Further Experience and Improvement

I would like to be able to actually examine the numbers that the county spends and

discuss how that is further broken down. Finance is something that intimidates me at the

administrator level, so I would want to learn more and be more hands on with those financial

numbers.
