Standard Summary

Standard 8: Meaningful Engagement of Families and Community

“Effective educational leaders engage families and the community in meaningful, reciprocal, and

mutually beneficial ways to promote each student’s academic success and well-being.” This

standard was met by participating in the following activities.

 Standard Activity 8.34A: For this activity, I conducted a survey on school climate at

Clay County High School. Using this survey, I analyzed the overall school climate and

recommended ways that it can be improved.

 Standard Activity 8.34C: This standard activity was focused on parent involvement at

Clay County High School. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and

therefore we do not see a lot of parent involvement. My recommendation was that we

hold more opportunities for parents to come to the school and connect with their students’

work.

 Standard Activity 8.35A: This activity was a list of all the resources available to Clay

County High School students and the community.

Key Learnings from the Experience

From this experience, I learned that school climate has a huge impact on students’

achievements and even extends to parent and community involvement. School climate should be

a priority of administrators. We also need to involve parents more than just discipline or negative

grades. We should show them that the school is a positive learning enivornment.

Area(s) Needing Further Experience and Improvement

I would like to learn how to better communicate with parents and the community. I really

do not enjoy calling parents, especially over discipline matters. I think that I need more

experience in this area. I also think it is important to learn how to involve parents more and how

to connect with them so that they feel involved with their students education.
