Quality and Inspection Requirements for New and Refurbished Drilling and Well Completion Equipment

Once printed this specification becomes an uncontrolled copy of the online version.

SCOPE
This GENERAL NS-1™ Specification details specifies the minimum quality and inspection requirements applied to
wrought Low Alloy Steel Drill Pipe Crossover Pup Joints.
It applies to:

• Non-Sour service conditions

• Surface equipment, minimum design temperatures, -20°C (-4°F) and above
• Subsurface equipment, all operating temperatures

This equipment shall be in conformance with API Spec 7-1, API 5DP, API RP7G and the requirements of this NS-
1™ Spec. If in conflict the requirements of this NS-1™ Spec shall prevail. Where there is apparent conflict between
the supplementary requirements and the sub-specifications, the requirements of the supplementary specification
shall prevail.

Historical Background
This specification was developed as a result of an increase demand of Pup Joints to be used for the crossover of
different sizes of Drill Pipe. This increase in demand stemmed from the problems incurred by the usage of BHA
crossover subs as Drill Pipe crossover subs some of which resulted in expensive failures downhole.

SUPPLEMENTARY REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements are supplementary to and shall be applied in conjunction with the quality subspecifi-
cations called out in the matrix of this NS-1™ Specification.

1. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
1.1 As per API Spec 5DP, ‘Yield Strength’ and ‘Ultimate Tensile Strength’ of Integral Drill Pipe
Crossover Pup Joints shall not be lower than 120 ksi and 140 ksi respectively for Drill Pipe Tool
Joints.

The minimum ‘Yield Capacity’, in both tension and torsion, of the manufactured pup joint shall be at
least the same, if not greater than that of the drill pipe with which it is run.

2. WELDING
2.1 No fabrication or repair welding shall be performed.

3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Stiffness ratio of the drill pipe pup joint body to the tube of the connecting drill pipe, shall be in the
range of 1 to 3.5.

3.2 Connections shall be machined as per API Spec 7-2 current edition, unless otherwise specified in the
data sheet (Appendix 5).

3.3 With the exception of threaded connections NC35 and smaller, the thread roots of all connections
shall be cold rolled after final machining. All connections that have been cold rolled shall be marked
by hard stamping the connection with a circle enclosing the letters ‘CW’ as specified in API Spec 7-2
current edition.

3.4 All new tool joint connections shall be provided with a benchmark in accordance with the
requirements API RP7G latest revision as a minimum, except that the preferred form of the
benchmark is an indicator that provides a 360° reference around the connection (see Appendix 3).
This type of benchmark is superior to the API one, in that it reveals not only the extent of re-facing
but also how perpendicular the refaced seal is to the pipe’s axis.

3.5 The threaded connections shall be protected with suitable impact resistant thread protectors.

4. MATERIAL TESTING
4.1 Chemical analysis (Ref. Sub-Spec 10.1 & Sub-Spec 10.4)
Chemical analysis of the Pup Joint material shall be carried out on a heat basis and shall include all
the requirements tabulated in the manufacturer’s applicable material specification.

The chemical composition shall comply with the manufacturer’s material specification and have
minimum mechanical properties outlined in paragraph 1.

4.2 Tensile testing (Ref. Sub-Spec 10.1 & Sub-Spec 10.4)

Tensile testing to ASTM A370 shall as a minimum, establish yield stress, tensile stress, elongation
and reduction in area on a heat/heat treatment lot basis.

Test specimens shall be taken from a location representative of the pin connection as shown in API
Spec.5DP for tool joints.

4.3 Impact testing (Ref. Sub-Spec 150.1)

The Charpy ‘V’ notch energy level shall be 42 joules (31 ft.lbs) minimum average of three test
specimens tested at –20°C. No individual value should be less than 32 joules (24 ft.lbf.).

4.4 Hardness testing (Ref. Sub-Spec. 70.1)

Through thickness hardness verification shall be carried out on the wrought material, applying the
sampling basis indicated below. Measurements shall be taken at room temperature on a radial cross
section as indicated in Appendix 1.

Pre-heat treated bar stock or mechanical tubing shall have a test specimen taken at least one radius
from the end of each bar/tube.

When rough machined (O.D. and I.D.) prior to final heat treatment, hardness tests shall be carried
out on a heat/heat treatment lot basis using a test sample of similar O.D. and I.D. dimensions (taken
at a location of max. wall thickness of a rough machined body). The length of the test sample shall
be at least equal to the sample O.D. the cross section specimen shall be taken at mid length.

All hardness test results taken on a single cross section shall be within a range of 6 HRC points, with
no single value below 30 HRC (285 BHN). The absolute values shall meet the manufacturer’s
material specification.

5. PROFILE, DIMENSIONS AND LENGTHS

Tool joint dimensions & tolerances should be as per API Spec 5DP with exception of the tool joint length which
should be LP + 1” on the pin end and LB + 2” on the box end. The pin taper angle should be 18◦ or 35◦ as
defined in the data sheet (Appendix 5). The box taper angle should be 18◦ .

Overall Length is dependent on customer requirements as specified in the data sheet (Appendix 5).

The Transition on Crossover Drill Pipe Pup Joints should have a maximum SR (Stiffness Ratio) of 3.5 in any one
transition. Refer to Appendix 4 for suitable drill pipe pup joint crossover sizes, which remain within the required
stiffness ratio range of 1 to 3.5.
If the SR is greater than 3.5 then the Pup Joint shall be profiled with a bottleneck in the tube, (See Appendix 2).
The angle of the transition should be between 5◦ and 10◦ .

6. MARKING
(Ref. Sub-Spec. 20.3)

Each Pup Joint shall be provided with a Milled Slot on the Pin Tool Joint OD identifying the tool Serial number,
Drill Pipe Crossover Sizes and end connection sizes as shown in Appendix 2.

7. INSPECTION
(Ref. Sub-Spec 40.1 & 50.1)

Ultrasonic Examination (UT) shall as a minimum, be carried out as per API spec 7-1 for Ultrasonic Evalua-
tion.

The bore at each end shall be concentric with the centreline, eccentricity shall not exceed 1.6 mm (1/16").

The variation in wall thickness across the step shall not exceed 1.6 mm (1/16"). Steps within the above ac-
ceptance criteria shall be dressed to a smooth finish.

A 100% wet magnetic particle inspection (MT) and visual examination (VE) shall be carried out post machining
process.

8. FUNCTIONAL TESTING
(Ref. Sub-Spec 130.1)

Functional testing shall be carried out to the manufacturers specifications but shall include the following require-
ment as a minimum:

• The bore of each collar shall be drift tested as per API Spec 7-1.

9. DATA SHEET
The use of data sheets to summarise detailed requirements is strongly recommended. The use of such data sheets
by those specifying pipe to be supplied and those supplying the pipe has shown to eliminate confusion as to what
is required and what is being supplied. A suitable sample is provided in Appendix 5.
