CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

RESEARCH TOPIC
Deficit in the implementation of didactic strategies for the development of topics in the area of
English in the Florida Educational Institution (Rovira-Tolima).

2.1 Overview

Types of publications

In 2009, a project called “proposal for the improvement of English in 4b students of the Antonio
José de Sucre IED school was carried out, through the implementation of multimedia teaching
units”, whose objective was to improve the learning processes of the fourth grade students of the
Antonio José de Sucre I.E.D school, through multimedia teaching units. Likewise, its objective
was to design the fourth grade program based on the needs of the students and the MEN's
standards of English proficiency; It was also based on motivating students towards learning
through multimedia teaching units and making use of technology as a teaching tool in teaching-
learning processes.

Based on the problems evidenced in the learning of English by grade 4B students from the
Antonio José de Sucre IED school, a possible solution is proposed taking into account some
authors who have consulted the subject: among them Juan Bestard Moroig and María
Concepción Pérez Martín, authors of the book on the teaching of the English language in which
the factors that influence a second language, the theories and methods of teaching a language,
use of aids and materials for teaching English, learning English are studied. a language and the
language aspects. The authors are based on research by authors such as Gardner, Lambert, Noam
Chomsky, among others, Piaget, Skinner.[ CITATION Dia89 \l 2058 ]

[ CITATION wen13 \l 2058 ] it claims that knowledge is divided into three parts. The first one
refers to the methods that have the transformation of the student based on the preponderant
action of an external agent and on the primacy of the studied objective. The second is self-
structuring, methods that tend to help form on the basis of their own action and with the
supremacy of the subject. The third part ventures into the field of psychology and
psychopedagogy, it is dedicated to the study of the perspectives of application of cognitive
processes, from synthesis to some teaching disciplines. From which the part that talks about
learning a second language is taken up to support the proposal.

According to the research topic, a doctoral thesis was found, from the University of Seville, in
2005, entitled “Design of a software for the development of written language from a functional
approach”. This research allowed the design of educational software for children and teachers of
the initial level to develop written language from a functional approach. the knowledge of the
reality of educational centers and the scarce production of software in venezuela along with the
existence of others produced in different countries with traditional approaches to teaching written
language that prompted them to propose the design of a program to develop written language
from a functional approach. As a frame of reference, they point out that experiences for language
development have made it possible to verify that the child builds the written language in a long
process of interaction with various written materials produced in different formats, including
multimedia..[CITATION JEN09 \l 2058 ]

[ CITATION Gor11 \l 2058 ] who, in a content-based study, collects different proposals aimed at
improving oral comprehension in English, which allows him to identify how, from the
theoretical approach, certain strategies facilitate learning. His proposals are based on specific
content and a specific cognitive framework. The study concludes with a series of suggestions so
that the language teacher can facilitate the incorporation of new learning and uses of the
language. The limitation of this study is located in the focus, which is on a single skill (oral
production), although content-based strategies are interesting, their application in preschool is
little significant for the cognitive framework of the model.

Along the same lines, but with a more critical perspective and based on approaches based on
multiple intelligences, emotional intelligence and learning styles [ CITATION Lui12 \l 2058 ]
published an English teaching-learning case based on "constructive paranoia". According to the
author, the term was first raised by Oppenheimer and is used to criticize the current effectiveness
in teaching English. But it does not remain in the criticism, since the author recommends what
should be done to obtain more satisfactory results. He concludes that it is necessary to “develop a
proposal for restructuring in the approach, the curriculum and the methodology in teaching the
language”. I believe that both studies differ from what we are looking for here in terms of
teaching and leave free the opportunity to delve into the topic of strategies.

Regarding teaching the language in a holistic or fractional way,[ CITATION Gue14 \l 2058 ],
In her doctoral thesis work, she explores the usefulness of extra-school support for learning
English vocabulary, identifying the importance of extracurricular or “non-formal” stimulation.

On the other hand [ CITATION Isa09 \l 2058 ] She conducted a study to see the effect of reading
poetry on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) motivation. Likewise, it was possible to identify
that the teaching method of the teachers affects the motivation towards reading. When the
process is positively valued, it is possible to achieve that the student develops the intrinsic
motivation that, in turn, becomes the will to read autonomously. Although the study has in
common with the case of a school in Colima the context of learning English as a foreign
language, the research focuses exclusively on analyzing the impact of the use of poems on
motivation, what is not clear are the 25 strategies implemented when presenting the poems and
also the benefit obtained in terms of learning the language itself.

2.2 Previous studies

Each of these study groups is discussed below. It will be possible to appreciate in the reviewed
literature a great variety of styles, approaches and ways of approaching the subject of language
teaching. Similarly, the review of each of these authors allows us to identify potential areas of
study, one of them is precisely to study the strategies used to teach children.

[ CITATION Cas12 \l 2058 ]

They share their findings from an exploratory study, regarding the development of competences
in the acquisition of the English language, concluding that it is important and relevant to base
English courses on the needs of the students and in real contexts, considering at all times the
level educational. From a similar study,[ CITATION Rue14 \l 2058 ], they make an evaluation of
the theoretical approaches for the acquisition of an L2 from the educational practice, reviewing
the characteristics of the National Program of English in Basic Education (PNIEB), particularly
in the third grade of preschool and the need to develop bilingualism through appropriation of
language practices that allow the child to express themselves and develop awareness about other
cultures. In a conclusive way,[ CITATION Cas12 \l 2058 ] affirm that "when the theoretical,
psychological, philosophical and pedagogical currents are combined, technological advances and
the four communication skills, in an interactive, dynamic and participatory environment, it
contributes to the internalization of their learning and subsequently to the use of the acquired
information " As can be seen, there is very little similarity between these studies and what we
want to observe here, which is related to actual teaching practices.

Documents focused on teacher training

A good number of authors consider the teacher and the actions that surround him as the focus of
their research. From this perspective it would seem that teacher training is the key piece. Topics
such as training, teaching performance, training, continuing education and others similar raise
concerns regarding the role of the teacher in the language classroom. [ CITATION Yam17 \l
2058 ] discusses the importance of providing novice language teachers with the necessary

teaching knowledge and practices. As a result of his case study, the author proposes a technique
for engaging new teachers in meaningful learning practices by analyzing their own performance
in the classroom.

On the other hand [ CITATION And08 \l 2058 ] In her publication he examines the difference
between the language learning strategies used by teachers in training and the relationship
between these and teaching performance. In this study, questionnaires, surveys, as well as the
results of an achievement and efficiency test and from the multiple regression analysis were
used. The study concluded by stating that students (language teachers in training) share
similarities in six strategies that are: memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective
and social. These results allow the author to recommend training and updating programs that
enable teachers to make a wider use of teaching strategies. I think it is an interesting approach
but it still leaves the space to investigate the strategies from another perspective.

Studies based on theories of language acquisition

The approach on the acquisition or learning of languages would not be complete without the
vision on the theories and related to the subject of teaching English as a foreign language or as a
second language. for [ CITATION Rue14 \l 2058 ], what is relevant are the theoretical approaches
that support teaching practice for the acquisition of a second language. It undoubtedly represents
an interesting approach, but far from what is intended to be observed in the Colima case, because
it focuses on theoretical approaches to teaching practice. On the other hand [ CITATION Fui14 \l
2058 ], In their article entitled Phonetic-phonological adjustments in children from 4 to 5 years
old who learn English as a second language, they present the results of a comparative study
between two groups of ten Spanish-speaking children each, whose schooling is carried out in one
of them in English as a second language and in the other in English as a foreign language. The
study is interesting for this research because it refers to a Latin American environment, the
children are of preschool age similar to this study and the results speak of the effect of
educational environments, but leave the space for didactic strategies, their analysis and
characteristics out of their conclusions.

Studies focused on the child's age and strategy manuals

[ CITATION Cop13 \l 2058 ] In their article Challenges in teaching English to young learners: global
perspectives and local realities, they focus on reviewing the challenges faced by English teachers
who work with children, including those related to: motivation; speech at the child's level; the
different learning skills; teaching in large groups; the discipline; teaching writing and grammar.
Likewise [ CITATION DeK13 \l 2058 ] In his article entitled Age effects in second language learning,
he emphasizes the importance of acquiring second languages in the initial stage (zero to six
years). [ CITATION Mer09 \l 2058 ] In his publication Early School English, he made a series of
reflections to clarify the idea that "the sooner children start the better" concluding that it is
convenient to learn a foreign language in preschool.

In addition to this in the preschool textbook series called Balloons and the Pockets series both
written by [ CITATION Her98 \l 2058 ],

They offer a complete variety of strategies, among which the use of ICT stands out. His proposal
establishes as basic strategies, the introduction to the topic (warm up), the presentation of
contents (presentation) and the practice (practice). Additionally, it establishes learning
assessment parameters and fun ways to expand activities in the classroom and at home. Despite
the fact that the date of printing is 1998, my personal experience allows me to affirm that the
series is still in use today. The list could continue, however, the difference between the different
series of textbooks and manuals is minimal, since in general, they offer a series of proposals that
although based on theories of teaching, their purpose is to market their products and This places
them in a special section of literary production related to language teaching and specifically
English teaching for preschool children. In my experience, many schools, including this one, use
English teaching methods based on book packages, commercial audiovisuals, etc. In some way,
it is the industry that marks, to a large extent, the strategies.

Research on play as a teaching-learning strategy

Regarding the contributions of [ CITATION Nic07 \l 2058 ] She says that games use it to have fun,
to understand her reality, and to control expressions of anger. Likewise, they state that through
the linguistic game they can exercise in the grammar and words they learn, as well as knowing
linguistic rules and making structures of meaning. On the other hand, the linguistic games are
interesting in learning because in this way they will improve their oral production and during our
classes it was a very good strategy for students to facilitate the creation of dialogues and
conversations. Likewise, he states that he states that language games are interesting for those
who learn to practice the development of boys and girls through exercise, in this way the
acquisition of language, greatly benefits from these language games and it would be desirable
that Spanish teachers to foreigners will gradually include some of these games in their teaching.

In the same way [ CITATION Bos16 \l 2058 ] they study the effect of the game used during the
teaching of grammar in Iranian children of an early age, finding that in the experimental group of
their study a considerable advance in the taste for learning and the learning of grammar itself is
distinguished. In another study [ CITATION Fél99 \l 2058 ] He places special emphasis on the use of
rhymes and songs in teaching English to children and they conclude that there is a significant
impact of play on learning, as it presents a "good perspective of English culture". The findings
presented in this section strengthen the idea of learning at an early age and leave room to delve
into the effects that play as a “poorly structured” or ready-to-wear strategy can have on language
acquisition or development of the four language skills in children of five and six years of age.

On the other hand [ CITATION ARI15 \l 2058 ] In their research proposal, they proposed “play as a
pedagogical strategy for learning vocabulary and developing oral ability in English”, since their
main objectives were to: Identify the level of vocabulary and oral ability in the English language
of the students by through a diagnostic test and field diaries, to undertake some improvement
strategies, as well as to propose a pedagogical strategy in order to improve vocabulary learning
and oral skill development, based on the educational games proposed, through different
theoretical foundations and develop the proposal from the game as a pedagogical tool for
teaching vocabulary and developing English skills. With this research it was concluded that the

game promotes personal values, produces joy, pleasure and comfort, demonstrated by the
observations of the teacher in charge of the experimental group and the final survey. The game
encourages students to learn more vocabulary every day and improve their oral skills, since their
learning depends on their inclusion and participation in the different activities proposed. In
addition, since the students did not feel evaluated when speaking, they did not perceive any type
of external pressure that prevented or restrained them from doing so and even if they were
wrong, they looked for a way to get ahead, because they were in a natural environment that
promoted learning unconscious.

Research on development theories and technologies in language teaching

For other authors, child development and the incorporation of technologies represent an
interesting topic, current and global in scope; however, for the purposes of this research, as ICTs
are no longer the focus of attention, their relevance is reduced to the effect they have when the
strategies implemented, for the teaching of languages, are based on technology. [CITATION
Con08 \l 2058 ] after an analysis of the different methods and a brief review by the authors,
considers that ICT are tools to support the teacher. The author points out the primordial role of
the interaction of the communicative approaches, and rejects the behavioral currents. For his part
[ CITATION Mou15 \l 2058 ] explores the use of "Arcade" games discovering that they have a
positive impact on motivation for vocabulary learning and language skills development in
elementary level children.
