History has played a large role in my decisions, it led me to take history courses at GCSE level and A-

level. I have a deep interest in history, I have enjoyed independent research and educational research
into many different subjects, though I have focused my research on modern history and mythology.
From a young teen I have been watching history documentaries, these were war documentaries
focusing on the rise of Nazi Germany and the impact of the Second World War.

I have recently enjoyed learning about witchcraft and the craze it caused, the theories suggested
intrigued me as they used both geological markers and accounts written to create a theory. Many of
what witches were accused to of done can now be debunked by science. I find it interesting to study
why it happened, my main focus has been the Salem witch trials as they are an anomaly, they took place
almost a century after the last large witch hunt. I find it fascinating to learn how people have changed
the course of history. My personal research has been focused more on revolutions and wars in modern
history, I enjoyed researching how they started and what choices changed the outcomes.

I have studied history at A-level alongside English literature and language and Photography, I am
currently completing a Media production course, throughout these courses I have learnt and developed
skills in analysis and research, these have been developed through independent and group projects. I
have benefited from these projects as it has given me chance to explore themes and ideas I hadn’t
before. I one of my recent projects I created work based of short stories written by the Brothers Grimm,
I enjoyed reading these stories and created a photography based around them, the history of these
stores caught my interest as they each had a moral or message within and which often reflected on the
era they were written.

I have been reading and studying work written in different time periods, my personal favourite so far has
included works such as The Great Gatsby and Shakespeare. I have enjoyed these texts as it has given
more of an insight into the different eras and important themes within these eras, The Great Gatsby
gave a different insight into the 1920s,, though it followed the idea of a new age and of the roaring
twenties it holds a deeper meaning, it so more social issues and implies the more nefarious practices of
the 1920s. I find it’s well written and reflects what most people now perceive as the 1920s. Shakespeare
is well known for his tragedies, the way he causes an audience to feel and reflect on what is being
shown to them, his plays often hold controversial opinions, such as Othello have the lead role being a
black male, it shows the stereotypes that would of been seen and gives a clearer view of opinions of that
era.

My long-term goal is to pursue a career in history, I want to teach modern history, I have chosen this
area as it is the area, I have most enjoyed researching and learning about. I want to further my
knowledge of modern history and see how choices or people have changed the course of history, the
benefits it had. In the years to come I would like to travel the world to learn more about world history
and visit historical landmarks.

I believe I am a good candidate for this course because of the skills I have developed through my A-
levels and Media production course, such as research and analysis. With the skills I have developed
through my A-levels and the enthusiasm I have for history, I hope to gain a better understanding of the
subject and create a career at the end of my study.
