o What are the objectives of this research?

Today, becoming fluent in more than one language is no longer a luxury, but has
become a necessity. It is well known that English is the most widely taught first
language in the world, knowing how to learn it is essential and for this reason the
various methodologies of applied linguistics have been continuously analyzed: the
objective of this article is to briefly describe current theoretical approaches on the
role of consciousness in language learning.

o What are the research questions?

This article has presented a concise overview of the theoretical and methodological
issues surrounding the role of awareness in adult second/foreign language behavior
and learning, and provided a brief report of current empirical studies that have
employed verbal reports to investigate this role in L2 development in the L2
classroom.

Van Lier quotes Humboldt: “Language cannot really be teaching. It can only be
awakened in the soul,” referring to this natural internal process of man. (1995, p. 21).
For this reason, this is where the research question arises in this article:

• What is awareness and how has it been defined in SLA?

• Why is the use of the SLA approach an intrinsic motivation that the student
obtains to solve communication through the use of critical reasoning and
analysis of their own language.?
o What is its significance in the field of language learning?
The role of Consciousness in the development of the acquisition of a second
language is a methodological proposal, whose objective is to find a balance that
provides the student with the necessary tools to solve a communicative situation
through critical reflection in different contexts. Through this approach, students
become motivated and self-sufficient in the learning process and acquire a global
knowledge of other languages that allows them to have a deeper vision at the
linguistic and cultural level, ideal for our current world.
