Bihar Current Affairs – January 2019


352nd Prakash Utsav of Guru Gobind Singh celebrated on January 13
On January 13, 2019, the 352nd birth anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Govind Singh ji, was
celebrated as Prakash utsav at Patna Sahib, in Bihar, the birth place of Guruji.
i. The main function was organised at Takhat Sri Harmandir Sahib Gurdwara, Patna Sahib.
ii. Guru Govind Singh ji was the creator of KhalsaPanth.
iii. The 10th Sikh Guru was a spiritual leader, philosopher, poet and master warrior. He is considered as the
eternal guru by his followers because of his contribution to Sikhism.
PM released commemorative coin on Sikh Guru Gobind Singh in New Delhi
On January 13, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a commemorative coin of 350 rupees on Guru
Govind Singh ji in New Delhi on the eve of 352nd birth anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru.
i. He also announced that the Kartarpur corridor located in Punjab, Pakistan, is being built for devotees to
go visit and pray.
ii. Including celebrations of the 352nd Prakash Utsav of Guru Gobind Singh all over the country, the centre
would also celebrate Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th birth anniversary.
iii. Earier in November 23, 2018, the centre started its year-long celebrations to commemorate 550th Birth
Anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
About Kartarpur corridor:
♦On November 22, the cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi approved the corridor from Dera Baba Nanak to
the Pakistan border.
♦It involves a road link for Sikh pilgrims to visit the famous Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan.
♦The 16th century GurdwaraDarbar Sahib Kartarpur on the banks of the river Ravi is important for Sikhs as
Guru Nanak Dev, their main guru, spent 18 years here. The gurudwara was established by the first Sikh Guru in
1522.

Bihar Current Affairs – February 2019


Bihar Budget 2019-20 presented by Sushil Kumar Modi
Sushil Kumar Modi, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, presented the state budget of Rs 2,00,501 crore for the
Financial Year 2019-20.Bihar has finished with highest growth rate among all the states by size of this budget
at Rs 2 lakh crore is nine times more than the budget of 2004-05.
i. The maximum allocation of Rs 34,799 crore is made to the Education Sector.
ii.Rs 2,958.77 crore allocated for Rural Development and Rural Works Department .
iii. Under the Pradhan MantriKisanSammanNidhiYojna, over 1 lakh farmers have been registered in the
state.
iv. Rs. 901 crore transferred to the bank accounts of farmers as subsidy in more than 280 draught affected
blocks in 24 districts

Universal Old Age Pension scheme has been announced by Bihar Government
Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar announced an Universal Old Age Pension scheme,
named MukhyaMantriVriddha Pension Yojana (MMVPY), irrespective for all caste, community, religion,
except for those who are retired from government organizations.
Key points
i. The scheme facilitates the amount of Rs. 400 monthly pension for all in the state above the age of 60 years
who are not getting pension from the government.
ii. The scheme will come into its enforcement from 1st April, 2019.
iii. Other than this scheme, Bihar’s govt. has also proclaimed a pension of Rs. 6,000 for journalists above 60
years of age, which will get implemented from 1st April, 2019.
iv.Currently old age pension scheme is applicable to only the BPL category.

A 3-day KrishiKumbhMela held in Bihar


Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh along with Bihar Governor LaljiTandon inaugurated the 3-
day long KrishiKumbhMela in Motihari, Bihar.
i. The main objective of the event is promoting modern techniques and diversification in agriculture to
help in doubling farmer’s income.
ii. According to the Shri Radha Mohan Singh, the government aims to double the income of farmers
by 2022 and it is also creating a strong infrastructure from ‘Beej to Bazar’ for enhancing the farmer’s income
iii. Government is creating strong infrastructure from “Beej to Bazar” for enhancing the farmer’s income.
iv. The Union Agriculture Minister, with the support of state Chief Ministers, is set to the implement
the Pradhan MantriKisanSammanNidhi (PM-KISAN) program in an efficient manner to ensure expeditious
transfer of benefits to farmers
About PM-KISAN Scheme
Centrally sponsored scheme under which an income support of Rs 6000/- per year (in 3 instalments) will be
provided to small and marginal farmer families having combined land holding/ownership of up to 2 hectares

Bihar becomes the 1st state to deploy dog squad to check liquor smuggling
Bihar has become the first state to deploy specially-trained dogs to check smuggling of liquor which continues
to take place inspite of total ban imposed in the state for the last 3 years. 20 liquor-tracker dogs were trained
rigorously for nine months in Hyderabad, Telangana.
i. They were trained at Hyderabad-based Integrated Intelligence Training Academy. Patna will witness
deployment of 4 such dogs.
ii. This action was taken after the seizure of more than three million litres of illegal alcohol since April 2016.

National Foundation for Communal Harmony organized a special workshop under Know My India
Programme held in Bengaluru
On 4th February 2019, On the lines of Know My India Programme,the National Foundation for Communal
Harmony (NFCH), organized a special workshop for 42 Youth in the age group of 15 to 22 years, who has
suffered communal violence.The Youths Participated in the Programme belongs to Jammu & Kashmir, Manipur,
Assam, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Gujarat along with 10 official mentors.
Key points
i. The programme was organized by the Art of Living Foundation.
ii. Youth interacted with Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a spiritual leader.
iii. The participants were taught various body-breath mechanisms and practical tools of wisdom.The main
exercise included the powerful rhythmic breathing practice called SudarshanKriya, whose regular practice is
known to significantly reduce stress hormones, improve the clarity of mind and increase one’s happiness
quotient.
About Know My India Programme
i. It is a unique programme initiated by the NFCH to bring together financially assisted children of the
foundation from different states and regions of the country to promote oneness, fraternity and national
integration.

Cabinet approved the Investment approval for 2X660MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Buxar, Bihar with
an estimated cost of Rs.10439.09 cr. The project will be implemented by SJVN Thermal Private Limited.

107th foundation day of Bihar observed on March 22


On 22nd March 2019, Bihar celebrated its 107th foundation day called Bihar Diwas 2019 or Bihar Day to
commemorate Bihar’s separation from Bengal Presidency in 1912. It is a public holiday in Bihar.
Key Points
i. The State Government of Bihar organized Bihar Utsav in Delhi which was a fortnight long festival that
showcases art, culture and heritage of Bihar.
ii. The celebrations begun from the residency of Nitish Kumar and celebrated on vast scale by the State
Government. The day denotes the development of the territory of Bihar.

According to WHO’s report, India faces severe shortage of healthcare providers, especially in Bihar,
Jharkhand, U.P. & Rajasthan
The WHO (World Health Organization) has published a research paper titled ‘Forecasting the future need
and gaps in requirements for public health professionals in India upto 2026’ in the ‘WHO South-East
Asia Journal of Public Health‘, in which it states that India faces critical shortage of healthcare professionals,
especially in Bihar, Jharkhand, U.P. (Uttar Pradesh) & Rajasthan which have the worst hit ratio as
compared to Delhi, Kerala, Punjab and Gujarat which are in a relatively better position.
i. Health workforce includes all those people engaged in actions whose primary intent is to enhance and
improve the health of the general public affected with any kind of health issue.
Key Points:
i. In spite of the 5 million workers being employed by the health sector in India, according to WHO’s database,
the low density of health providers in India is even lower than nations like Sri Lanka, China, Thailand, United
Kingdom and Brazil.
ii. India’s health workforce can be broadly classified into 8 categories which are named as follows:
• doctors (allopathic, alternative medicine)
• nursing and midwifery professionals
• public health professionals (medical, non-medical)
• pharmacists
• dentists
• paramedical workers (allied health professionals)
• grass-root workers (frontline workers)
• support staff
iii. WHO notifies that Southeast Asia requires a 50% rise in healthcare employment in order to reach
the universal health coverage by 2030.
iv. The immediate action to be taken for improvement are as follows:
• employment of various categories of non-physician care providers
• valuation must be given to capability or core competency, and just not qualification.

• changes to be brought in regulatory structures to incorporate flexibility for innovations


v. The research study by WHO notifies that according to the 2008 Government statistics based on vacancies
in sanctioned posts:
• 18% of primary health centres were without a doctor
• 38% of primary health centres were without a laboratory technician
• 16% of primary health centres were without a pharmacist

Bihar Current Affairs – June 2019


Rs 384 crore sanctioned by Bihar Cabinet for old age pension scheme
On May 31, 2019, Bihar cabinet chaired by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sanctioned Rs 384 crore for old
age pension scheme under the Chief Minister Old Age Pension Scheme for financial year 2019-20. Under this
scheme, people in the age group of 60-79 will get Rs 400 per month and people aged above 80 will get Rs 500
per month as pension with the total beneficiaries being 36.50 lakh.
Key Points:
i. Altogether, the cabinet approved 18 decisions.
ii. Rs 384 crore was sanctioned from the Bihar Contingency Fund(BCF) to the people aged over 60 who do
not receive any salary, pension, family pension or social security pension either from central and state
government.
iii. It increased the corpus of the Bihar Contingency Fund to Rs 8020.04 crore from Rs 350 crore till March 30,
2020.
iv. Along with this, the hike was given in ex-gratia payment to the families of polling personnel who died during
election duty. If the personnel died in a violence, armed attack, blast, etc while performing election duty, he
would be given Rs. 30 lakh against the existing Rs. 15 lakh. Rs 15 lakh would be given to personnel suffering
from permanent disability against the existing Rs. 7 lakh. The payment would be shared by the Centre and State
government in 50:50 ratio.
v. It permitted to set up one dispensary each in 38 district court premises with the creation of 5 posts which
includes a medical officer, nurse, pharmacist and lower division clerk in each dispensary.
vi. It sanctioned the release of Rs. 33 crore for salaries to teachers under SamagraShikshaAbhiyan (SSA), Rs.
103 crore for the construction of sewage treatment plant at Danapur and Rs. 46.25 crore for Phulwarisharif
under the NamamiGange project.
vii. The proposal to declare the post of ShramKalyanPadadhikari(Supervisor) was approved and hereafter, as
per the amended rules, the schemes of ‘Hargharnalkajal’ worth less than Rs 2 crore for a ward is to be cleared
by executive engineer.
viii. Approval was given to transfer 3 acres of land to BardhamanAyurvigyanSansthan, Pawapuri for the
establishment of model health institute to give healthcare under Ayurvedic system.
ix. 5 acres of government land would also be provided for the establishment of SashastraSeema Bal camp,
12th battalion, at Pathamari in Thakurganj block of Kishanganj district.

Bihar Government launches MukhyamantriVriddha Pension Yojna


On June 14,2019 The state Government of Bihar launched MukhyamantriVriddha Pension Yojna for poor
people above 60 years of age which is effective from April 1, 2019.This was launched by the Bihar Chief
Minister Nitish Kumar.
Key points:
i. Under the MukhyamantriVriddha Pension Yojna, Poor people above the age of 60 years will get Rs 400 per
month and those people above the age of 80 years will get Rs. 500 per month.
ii. Retired government employees will not covered under the scheme.
iii. The state government had allocated fund of Rs 18,000 crore for the scheme.

Bihar Cabinet approved the proposal to punish children who abandon their elderly parents
Bihar Cabinet led by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar approved the proposal seeking provisions to punish
children who abandon their elderly parents. They could face jail time over charges of abandonment.
Key Points:
i. The proposal seeking provision was submitted by the Bihar Social Welfare Department.
ii. The cases will be lodged on the complaints of the parents. They will be registered under the non-bailable
section.

Encephalitis, heat-wave claim 100 lives in Bihar


In Bihar, More than 100 children have lost their lives due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and heat
wave. The total toll due to AES has been pegged at 104 including 17 deaths in Muzaffarpur.
i. National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC)has issued notices to the Union Health Ministry to review the
situation prevailed in Bihar.
ii. Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan held a meeting with the stakeholders taking measures including
setting up first line treatment facilities and 100 bedded ICU for pediatrics unit.
iii. The centre also decided to deploy high level team to be sent to Bihar immediately for undertaking the
necessary groundwork for setting up a state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary research center at Muzaffarpur.
iv. Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar had announced an ex-gratia package of Rs 4 lakh each to families of the
children who died.
About Encephalitis:
The toxic substance in lychee causes Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES),locally known as ChamkiBukhar,
which is a form of brain fever that happens due to the inflammation of the brain.

Government of Bihar bans tree-felling


Under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, The State Government of Bihar recently issued an order banning
felling of trees, citing increasing pollution and heatwave.
Key points:
i. The order came after the increasing pollution in the cities of Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, and others
in the state.
ii. The heatwave claimed 90 people in Gaya, Aurangabad and Nawada districts.
iii. Now the permissions granted to cut trees for development works, have become null and void.
iv. The government took a decision after the indiscriminate felling of big, old trees in Capital Patna during the
last few years for the construction of roads and buildings and more than 2,200 trees have been chopped in the
last two-and-a-half years.
v. Now anyone wants to remove a tree for any development project would have to translocate it & the
Engineers have been asked not to cut trees while building or expanding roads.

5th edition of Dharma-Dhamma conference held in Rajgir, Bihar
A two-day 5th International Dharma-Dhamma conference was held at Rajgir International Convention
Centre(RICC) in Rajgir, Bihar from 27 -28 July 2019 with the theme of “Sat-Chit-Ananda & Nirvana in
Dharma-Dhamma Traditions”. Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports KirenRijiju who was the
Chief Guest inaugurated the conference.
Key points:
i. Purpose: To address people about terror, violence and global warming prevalent in world & subjects of Sat
(Truth) -Chit (Consciousness)-Ananda (Bliss) and Nirvana (Enlightenment)Dharma-Dhamma Tradition which
are pivotal topics of Buddhism.
ii. Organizers: Nalanda University, Rajgir in collaboration with India Foundation (Centre for Study of Religion
and Society), New Delhi organized the event.

Fagu Chauhan, a six-time member of the UP Assembly, sworn as new Governor of Bihar
On July 29, 2019, Fagu Chauhan, a six-time member of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, was sworn in as
the 29thGovernor of Bihar replacing Lal Ji Tandon who has taken charge as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh.
i.Oath taking ceremony was administered by Chief Justice of the Patna High Court AmreshwarPratapShahi at
the Raj Bhavan in Patna in the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar
Modi and other leaders.

Madhubani painting and Sujni artist Karpuri Devi passed away in the Madhubani district of Bihar
On July 30, 2019, Madhubani painting and Sujni artist Karpuri Devi, aged 94, passed away at the Heart
Hospital at Mangarauni village in Madhubani district of Bihar where she was undergoing treatment. She hailed
from Ranti village of Bihar and belonged to the first generation of Mithila painting artists.
i. The National Award recipient contributed towards setting up of the Mithila Museum which is located in
Tokamachi hills in Japan’s Niigata region.
ii. She was the recipient of several state awards and national merit certificate given by the Ministry of textiles,
Union government.

Former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra passes away at 82


Jagannath Mishra, former Bihar chief minister and JD(U) i.e., Janata Dal (United) leader passed away after
battling cancer on August 19, 2019. He was undergoing treatment in New Delhi and breathed his last there. He
hailed from Balua Bazar in Supaul district, Bihar.
Key points
i. Born on 24 June 1937, Mishra served as the chief minister of the state thrice. He was the last Congress chief
minister of the state. He also served as a Union minister in the P V Narasimha Rao cabinet. In 1980, he declared
Urdu as the second official language of the state.
ii. Mishra served as an economics professor at Bihar University before joining politics and also authored some
books.
iii. A three-day state mourning was announced condoling the former chief minister’s demise.

4-day long Chhath festival 2019 commenced in Bihar
On October 31, 2019, Chhath puja 2019, the festival of worship of the Sun God, is being celebrated on a large
scale in the state of Bihar, which was commenced with ritual of NahaiKhai. Devotees especially women across
the state were taking holy dip in Ganga and other rivers, ponds and water bodies. The Sun God’s sister Shashti
Devi, commonly called ChhathiMaiya, is also worshipped during Chhath puja.
Key points:
i.This festival lasting 4 days with ‘NahaiKhai’ on October 31, ‘Kharna’ on November 1, 2019 ‘Sandhya Arghya’
on November 2, 2019, and ‘UshaArghya’ on November 3,2019.
ii. The Puja is celebrated sixth day after Diwali or on the day of KarthikChhath. Apart from Bihar, it is also
observed in Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and also in Nepal.

Bihar banned 15-year-old vehicles in Patna & old govt cars in the state
On November 4, 2019 the Bihar govt, announced ban on usage of 15-year old cars in Patna and also on old govt
cars in the entire Bihar state. The decision was taken by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at a high-level
meeting, to curb rising air pollution in some districts of the state.
Key Points:
i.Private vehicles older than 15 years will be allowed to ply only if they pass the pollution test which will be
conducted by the govt in form of camps.
ii.Officials were also asked to investigate whether the brick kilns were using the latest technique to control
pollution.

Manisha Kulshreshtha won 28th Bihari Puraskar for 2018


On November 22, 2019 Noted writer from Rajasthan Manisha Kulshreshtha, was awarded the 28th edition of
the Bihar Puraskar for the year 2018. She was awarded for the novel ‘Swapnapash’. The award has
been given by KK Birla foundation. The award carried a citation, a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh and a plaque.
Key points:
i.Kulshreshtha(52years) who was born in Jodhpur(Rajasthan) is known for her works like ‘Shigaf’,
‘Shalbhanjika’ and ‘Panchkanya’. She is also the editor of Hindi web magazine ‘Hindi Next’.
ii.Award: The award is given to writers of Rajasthani origin for their outstanding work in hindi or Rajasthani
for the past 10 years. The award is named after famous Hindi poet Bihari. The Bihari Puraskar is one of the
three literary awards instituted by the KK Birla foundation.
iii.Members present: Author Mamta Kaliya(Chief guest), KK Birla Foundation director Suresh Rituparn and
others were present during the event.

Maharashtra holds top, Bihar ranks bottom: ‘India Justice Report 2019’
On November 7 2019, According to ‘India Justice Report 2019’, Maharashtra is the topest state among the 18
large-medium states that leads in the overall ranking of Indian States on justice delivery, followed by Kerala,
Tamil Nadu, and Punjab. In this classification, Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are at the bottom, while
among the list of seven smaller States, Goa leads the group.

Rights Initiative released the India Justice Report 2019. It was unveiled by former Supreme Court Judge
Justice Madan B. Lokur.
ii.Report- The report has been prepared on publicity data from the year 2012 to 2017 in government entities.
iii.Four Pillars-The report covers the justice of delivery on police, judiciary, prisons and legal aid.
iv.The Largest and mid-sized States-Maharashtra ranks first place with a score of 5.92. Whereas, Kerala
ranks the second place with a score of 5.85 followed by Tamil Nadu ranks in third place with 5.76 score. Bihar
and Uttar Pradesh ranks in bottom.
v.Small States-In Small States Goa ranks the first place with a score of 4.85 followed by Sikkim holds the
second place with 4.31 score. Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura are at the bottom rank.

Health Ministry:Gujarat best performer in PMJAY beneficiaries, UP & Bihar ranked worst
On November 22, 2019 the Union health ministry submitted its detail to the Parliament on the no. of
beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana scheme which is also known as Ayushman
Bharat. Gujarat was ranked as the best performer in terms of no. of hospital admissions. Gujarat has so far
made 1 million hospital admissions and raised health claim worth Rs 1,519 crore.
Worst performing states: Bihar and Uttar Pradesh(UP) were ranked as worst performers in terms of no. of
beneficiaries, as Bihar reported only 1,20,000 hospital admissions and UP reported 230,000 hospital
admissions.
Key Points:
i.Kerala’s performance: Kerala outdone both Bihar and UP combined in no. of hospital admissions despite
joining the scheme almost after 6 months. Kerala reported 6,00,000 hospital admissions
ii.Claim raised in UP, Bihar and kerala: The health claim report are as follows,
• Bihar: the state of bihar raised only Rs.104 crores worth health claims.
• UP: UP raised health claims worth Rs 247 crore.

• Kerala: Kerala despite joining the scheme late, had reported health claims of Rs 366 crore.
iii.Total health claims raised: Health claims worth Rs 7,602 crore were raised across the country under the
scheme till November 20, 2019 with nearly 6.2 million admissions country-wide.
iv.UP & Bihar worst performance reasons: The reason for the worst performance of UP and Bihar was due to
the fact that only a few public and private hospitals were empanelled under the scheme.
v.Other states performance: Smaller states like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have also individually reported
more hospital admissions with 680,000 & 360,000 respectively.

Fact- The scheme aims at making interventions in primary, secondary and tertiary care systems, covering both
preventive and promotive health, to address healthcare holistically.
Other name- National health protection scheme.

Bihar topped in acute respiratory infections among children under-5 yrs


On November 26, 2019 Non-Government Organisation(NGO), Save the Children released a report titled
“Situation Analysis of Pneumonia in India”. The report was on respiratory infections in children. As per the
report, Bihar recorded the highest prevalence of acute respiratory infections(ARIs) among children under the
age of 5 years when compared with the 5 high burden states between September 2018 and June 2019.
Report:
• Bihar had 15.9% of prevalence of ARIs. The other states in the top 5 ranking includes, Uttar Pradesh
(2nd), Jharkhand(3rd), Madhya Pradesh(4th) and Rajasthan(5th).
• The main risk factor related to this health issue was household air pollution that lead to childhood
pneumonia.
• Effect of improved fuel in household cooking: Using improved fuel, Liquefied Petroleum
Gas(LPG) for cooking had preventive effect on respiratory infections. It had 2% lower probability of
ARIs.
• ARI due to improper breastfeeding: The prevalence of ARI was 4% higher among children who
were breastfed one hour later after their birth and 2.4% higher for children breastfed for less than 6
months.
• 81% of caregivers preferred private sector for availing medical treatment for pneumonia in
children.
• Save the Children NGO has also indulged in preventing pneumonia in children. The details of
pneumonia prevention and pneumonia death control is launched in the report titled ‘Fighting for
breath in India’ by the organisation.

Renowned mathematician Vashishtha Narayan Singh passed away at the age of 74


On November 14, 2019, Renowned mathematician, Vashishth Narayan Singh, passed away at the age of
77 due to Schizophrenia (chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and
behaves) in Patna, Bihar.
Key Points:
i.Born in 1942 in Basantpur village of the Bhojpur district in Bihar, Narayan Singh was said to have challenged
Einstein’s theory of relativity.
ii.Narayan Singh completed his Ph.D on cycle vector space theory in 1969, and served as a professor at the
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur(IIT-K) and the Indian Statistical Institute(ISI), Kolkata. He was also a
visiting professor at Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University, Madhepura, Bihar.

Overview of 39th India International Trade Fair 2019 held in New delhi
The 39th edition of the India International Trade Fair 2019 (IITF-2019) was held from November 14-27, 2019.
It was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Micro Small and Medium

Enterprises(MSME) Shri Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi. The fair was organised by the India Trade Promotion
Organisation (ITPO).
Partner & focus country: The partner country for the trade fair was Afghanistan. The focus country was
Republic of Korea. The focus states of the fair were Bihar and Jharkhand.
Theme: The theme for the year 2019 is “Ease of Doing Business”. The theme was inspired from India’s rise in
the ease of doing business rank for the year 2019. In 2019 it was ranked at 63rd position from 142nd rank in
2014.
Key Points:
i.MSME contribute up to 29% of India’s exports and has generated over 1 crore employment.
ii.Participants: Participants from various countries like Australia, UK, Iran, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Turkey,
and Vietnam attended the fair.
iii.Members present: Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Shri Som Parkash and other officials were
present in the event.
Minister of Minority Affairs inaugurated “Hunar Haat”:
Union Minister of Minority Affairs(MoMA) Shri Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi established “Hunar Haat”. Organised by
the minority affairs ministry, Hunar Haat” acts as a hub to encourage and promote traditional master artisans
and craftsmen from across the country.
All the “Hunar Haat”, to be organised in 2019 and 2020 will be based on the theme “Ek Bharat Shresth
Bharat”. Next “Hunar Haat” will be organised at Mumbai, Maharashtra from 20th to 31st December, 2019.
Key Points:
i.Naqvi established “Hunar Hubs” in every state of the country, where artisans, craftsmen will be
trained in the next 5 years in mastering craftworks. 100 “Hunar Hubs” were sanctioned during the first 100
days of the govt under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
ii.Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju; Secretary Minority Affairs Ministry Shri Pramod
Kumar Das and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
iii.Wooden Dhokra Craft (Jharkhand), Shibori (Gujarat), Dhakai Silk (West Bengal) and Black Metal Art
(Chhattisgarh) etc were exhibited in the trade fair.
Rural Development ministry inaugurated SARAS at IITF 2019
The Union Minister for Rural Development(MoRD), Panchayati Raj and Agriculture Shri Narendra Singh Tomar
inaugurated the SARAS IITF Mela 2019 at PragatiMaidan, New Delhi. The Minister of State for Rural
Development Shri Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti also participated as special guest at the event.
Key Points:
i.SARAS (Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society) mela would empower women from the Self Help
Group(SHG) to earn independently and provide a better social status.
Nitin Gadkari Inaugurates Khadi Pavilion at IITF:
Shri Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Khadi Pavilion at the IITF. Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries
Commission (KVIC) Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena and Secretary of MSME Dr. Arun Kumar Panda were present in
the event.
Key Points:
i.Various initiatives to promote Khadi crafts like promotion of pottery at railway stations, ban on import of
agarbattis, ban on import of National Flag etc have been undertaken.
ii.Live demos of Charkha, electric potter wheel, agarbatti making and other technological interventions for
showcasing ‘éase of doing business’ in the Khadi activities were arranged.
