Sport has always been popular in Estonia.

During the last few years, Estonian

athletes have own over 140 medals in international championship competitions.
In winter, many Estonians cross-country ski. Other popular sports are football
(soccer), and basketball. Estonia made its Olympic debut at the 1920 Games in
Antwerp, Belgium.

Cross-country skiing is one of the most popular sports since Estonia's first ski
competition in 1921, right after the World War I. Nowadays Tartu Ski Marathon,
established in 1960, continues to follow this tradition. It attracts professional and
amateur cross-country skiers from all over the world. The natural beauty of Estonia
and its flat landscape is ideal for this winter sport. Ski capital of Estonia is Otepää.

Andrus Veerpalu is Estonia's most successful Winter Olympian, having won the gold
medal in men's 15 kilometers classical in 2002 and 2006, and silver in men's 50
kilometers classical in 2002.

Also, I would like to talk more about basketball. Estonia men's national basketball
team first competed internationally at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Estonia men's
national basketball team has not shown great results but we do believe, that our
team will make us proud of their game in the future. Basketball National League of
Estonia is very popular in our country and many people come to watch basketball
games.

One of the most famous basketball players from Estonia is Martin Müürsepp. He
played as a power forward for the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks of the National
Basketball Association, and several teams in Europe. Now Martin Müürsepp is a
coach of TallinnaKalev/TLÜ alongside with Gert Kullamäe.

Estonia's first football match was held against Finland in 1920, being a 6–0 defeat.
The team participated in the 1924 Olympic Games tournament, their only
participation.
Estonia have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup or UEFA European
Championship. The team have however reached the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying play-
offs.

Mart Poom aka "Poominator" (goalkeeper) is considered to be the greatest

Estonian football player of all time. Former Derby County, Sunderland and Arsenal
goalkeeper has won the Estonian Player of the Year award a record six times making
him the most successful footballer in Estonia. Mart Poom was also selected as the
Golden Player by UEFA and received the Order of the White Star from the President
of Estonia.
Poom debuted for Estonia against Slovenia in 1992. Currently, Mart Poom is a
goalkeeping coach of the Estonian football team.
