Edward L. Thorndike’s Theory of Connectionism

Connectionism Theory
• Gave us the original S-R framework of behavioral psychology.
• Learning is the result of associations forming between stimuli and response.
• The model of S-R Theory was a trial and error learning.

Three Primary Laws:

• Law of Readiness
• Law of Exercise
• Law of Effect

Law of Readiness
States that the more readiness the learner has to respond to the stimulus,
the stronger the bond between them.
Law of Exercise
• It tells that the more S-R (stimulus and response) bond is practiced the
stronger it will become.
• Practice makes perfect.
• But practice without feedback does not necessarily enhance performance.
Law of Exercise
• The connection between stimulus to response is bond if the consequences
is positive.
• The connection between stimulus to response is weakened if the
consequences is negative.

Principles derived from Thorndike’s Theory of Connectionism:

• Learning requires both practice and rewards. (Law of Effect and
Exercise)
• A Series of S-R connections can be chained together if they
belong to the same action sequence.(Law of Readiness)
• Transfer of learning occur because of previously encountered.
• Intelligence is a function of the number of connections learned.
