CARD 1 | 0000-4K3M

There are two types of sentences in Arabic – the nominal sentence and the verbal sentence.
The verbal sentence starts with a verb. For example:

َ َ ‫أ َ َﺧ ْذتُ اﻟ ِﻛﺗ‬
‫ﺎب‬
Akhadhtu al-kitaab

I took the book.

َ‫ﺷ َِر ْﺑتَ اﻟﻘَﮭ َْوة‬

Sharibta al-qahwah

You (m.sg.) drank the coffee.

َ‫ﺎرة‬
َ ‫ﺳﯾﱠ‬
‫ﺳ َل اﻟ ﱠ‬ َ
َ ‫ﻏ‬
Ghasala as-sayyaarah

He washed the car.

ِ ‫َدﻓَ ْﻌ‬
َ‫ت اﻟﻔَﺗ ُ ْو َرة‬

As you have seen in the above examples, the object of the verb in Arabic generally takes a fat-
hah. Please note that ‫ ال‬is the definite article meaning “the.” Use the vocabulary below to form
the sentences that follow.

ar-rajul

the woman al-mar'ah ‫اﻟ َﻣ ْرأَة‬ the cup al-koob

the the an-

10. You (f.sg.) took the bag.

A statement can be turned into a question by adding ‫( َھ ْل‬hal) to

the front of it. For example:

‫ﺎرةَ؟‬
َ َ‫ﺳﯾ‬
‫ﺳ َل اﻟ ﱠ‬ َ ‫َھ ْل‬
َ ‫ﻏ‬
Did he wash the car?

ِ ‫َھ ْل َدﻓَ ْﻌ‬

‫ت اﻟﻔَﺗ ُ ْو َرةَ؟‬
Did you (f.sg.) pay the bill?

Change the 12 statements above into questions.

Sometimes verbs use prepositions.

ِ ‫َذ َھﺑْتُ ِإﻟَﻰ اﻟ ُﻣﺗْ َﺣ‬

‫ف‬
Dhahabtu ilaa al-mut-haf

She left the grocery.

‫ﺎرى‬
َ َ‫َر َﺟ ْﻌتَ ِﻣن اﻟ ُﻣﺑ‬
Raja’ta min al-mubaaraa

The verb ‫ ذھب‬must use the preposition ‫( إﻟﻰ‬to) when you are
speaking about going somewhere.

The verb ‫ ﺧرج‬must use the preposition ‫( ﻣن‬from) when you are
speaking about leaving a place.

The verb ‫ رﺟﻊ‬must use ‫ ﻣن‬when speaking about returning from

a place. However, if you are returning a thing, you would not
use ‫ ﻣن‬. For example, ‫ت اﻟﻧﱡﻘُ ْو َد‬
ِ ‫“ َر َﺟ ْﻌ‬You (f.sg.) returned the
money.”
