Introduction

Reading is an activity to get information about something. It is very important for teacher to
improve the students’ mastery of English. The main objective of English instruction both in lower and
upper secondary school is the development of reading skill, and students graduated from secondary
school must be competence in reading.

Reading skill is to develop fluent and proficient readers who are knowledgeable about reading
process. Therefore, the use of suitable books must be appropriate with the standard criteria that could
involve the student’s competence in reading, the student fells comfortable and understand the content
of the books. According to Nutall (2005:1), different people use the term reading in different ways, and
most of confusion can arise from consequent misunderstanding. A reading text and exercise, that are set
out to teach language especially English, usually is not provided with reading section. Therefore, English
textbook for the first year students of junior high school is used to make 1 2 the students understand
the content of the text for the part of intensive reading. It is chosen since the students have to learn
several particular topics. The focus of interest in the reading lesson is not only the language and content
but also both of them. The book used by the first year students of junior high school is to learn how
language is used to convey content from the language that expresses it. There are some skills that are
needed to extract the content of book from the language that expresses it.

These skills are needed by the students in order that they can be such kind of effective
independent readers. Reading skills enable students to turn writing into meaning and achieve the goals
of independence, comprehension, and fluency. Reading skills are specific abilities which enable a reader
to read the written form as meaningful language, anything written with independence, comprehension
and fluency and to mentally interact with the message. Reading questions establish a basis for
identifying and clarifying a meaning, purpose this influences the method of reading, degree of
comprehension reading rate and the skill employed. The questions must be developed in reading
comprehension to lead new knowledge and skill, help to quell controversy which promotes useful
discussion. Reading text is very important in order to support teaching learning process especially in
reading class

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study on the students satisfaction of Improving the reading skills of Grade7 Ilang – Ilang to
attain the following objectives:

1. To understand the major attributes of students satisfaction

2. To determine the factors influencing the level of students satisfaction in the reading skills

3. To specify the level of customer satisfaction on the quality of services provided by the Students
of Grade 10 Nitrogen

SUBJECTS OF THE STUDY

Based on the problems of research the written formulates the objectives of the study as follows.

1. To describe kinds of reading texts which are given in Grade 7 Ilang-Ilang students text book.
2. To identify the type of comprehension question developed in Grade 10 students Nitrogen based on
Nutall Taxonomy.

3. To describe the dominant types of comprehension questions.

THEORITICAL/CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Proposes a conceptual framework of students information search in an Grade 7 students Ilang-


Ilang In the students decision process, information search begins when the Grade 10 students Nitrogen
recognize a purchase problem . to solve this problem, the researcher have the choice of searching
information exclusively online or offline, or in combination. Consequently, these factors will affect the
amount of information in the Students of Grade 7 Ilang-Ilang.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to determine the level of Grade 7 students Ilang-Ilang, satisfaction provided by
Grade 10 Nitrogen in Canumay West National High School, Valenzuela City. Specifically it is seeking to
answer the following question:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondent according to:

A. Gender

B. Age

2. What are the effects of reading story books to the students?

3. Do you think it will help them to improve their reading skills?

4. What is the impact on reading story books to the students?


1.3 Hypothesis/Assumption

The Grade 7 students Ilang-Ilang of Canumay West National High School in Kaypandan Canumay
West, Valenzuela City are satisfied on the Services of Grade 10 Stundets Nitrogen offered by the
following students, performance, quality and fast settle problem of the students Grade 10 Nitorgen that
contributes to the students satisfaction of the respondent.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY STUDENTS

The result of this expected to be useful for:

1.4.1 The Students

To motivate and make enthusiasm the students in the learning process especially in reading teaching
and helpful for students will be able to create more enjoyable and meaningful learning.

1.4.2 The Teacher

This method makes the teacher easy in teaching reading and this expect to give useful contribution in
teaching reading and give another way for the teacher develop student’s reading.

1.4.3 The School

This research useful to improve the quality of education and develop English language teaching of the
school

1.4.4 The Researcher

The researcher will improve his knowledge in teaching reading method and have experience in
observation and apply with classroom action research at school.

1.4 Scope and Limitation of the study

This research study focuses on the level of satisfaction of students in Grade 7 Ilang-Ilang ,
Valenzuela City. The study will be conducted in Improving Skills Grade 7 Ilang-Ilang , Kaypandan
Canumay West Valenzuela City branch only because it gives more time and convenience to the
researchers to gather information. Most of the respondents live in the area of Valenzuela City especially
the Junior High School of Canumay West National High School. A survey design was used for this study
where the researchers made a questionnaire containing a question about the level of satisfaction of
Grade 7 Students Ilang-Ilang

DEFINITIONS OF TERMS

In this research there are to fife of key terms, they are analysis, English

reading text, reading comprehension, reading comprehension question and

reading taxonomy.
1. Analysis

Analysis is a study of something by examining its part and their relationship.

In this research the writer wants to analyze the content of reading textbook

including the exercises on it that is used by the first year students of junior

high school first year.

2. English Reading Text

According to Adam (1990) in Howell (1993:182), readings is an interactive

process through which the reader uses code, context analysis, prior

knowledge, vocabulary, and language a long with the executive control

strategies to understand. English text on reading skill means some

comprehensive texts in order to improve the English reading skill.

3. Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is the ability to interpret large chunks of texts

in a sensible, defendable fashion.

4. Reading Comprehension Question

Questions are very helpful when you read a text, must the time, people read

first, and then look at questions at the and of the text. This will help you

know what specific information to look for.

5. Reading Taxonomy

Reading taxonomy is an overview of types of understanding that

foreign language learners need to have if they are to read a written text

LITERATURE REVIEW

1. Reading

Reading is a very important skill that must be possessed by learnes. It would help them in
understanding the meaning of text learnt in the school. According to Tarigan (2008: 7), reading
is a process to get message of the writer through words or written languages.

While Leu (1987: 9) states that reading is a developmental, interactive and global
process involving learned skills. The process specifically incorporates an individual’s linguistic
knowledge., and can be both positively and negatively influenced by non linguistic internal and
external variables or factors.

2. The Aim of Reading


Reading is the process to understand a text or a passage. The purpose of reading is
to catch the idea or information in paragraph text. The primary target in reading is
comprehension. The following is the purpose of reading by Anderson in Cahyani
(20017: 99-100):
a. Reading for detail facts.
This reading activity is aimed to knowing at the discoveries that have been
dony by a character or to solve the problem creates.
b. Reading for main ideas.
This reading activities aimed at finding what the main topic of reading
passage is.
c. Reading for sequence or organization.
This reading activities aimed at knowing the sequence of event or story that
happens in the text.
d. Reading for inference.
This reading activities aimed to concluding the contents contained in the
reading passage.
3. The Advantages of Reading
Reading is an activity that has several benefits, such as to find information from
text, magazines, newspapers. There are at least 8 outlined benefits of reading
according to Dewi (2003) as follows:
a. Reading as Active Mental Process
When reading, students would be forces to think about things not yet
known. In this process, students would find out information that would
build students critical thinking.
b. Improving Student’s Vocabulary
by the reading, students can learn new words and the meaning
(asyet unknown ) to read and understand the content of twxt.
c. Improving Concentration and Focus
Students need to focus on books or texts that are being read for a long
time. Unlike magazines, internet or e-mail that only contains small pieces
of information, a book would tell the whole story. Therefor it is necessary
concentrating to read so that the concentration of the students would be
better.
4. The ways of Reading
According to Grellet (1984:4)
a. Skimming
Skimming is reading quickly by ruinnning one’s eyes over a text to get a gist
of it. The activities included in this way are compare value, find a compare
events, sect a title, draw inferences, decide the questions, and create the title
b. Scanning
Scanning is reading quickly through to find a particular piece of information.
The activities included in this way are words for old, locate grammar features,
find specified advertisement, compare details, check dates, shopping list,
make words sets, and newspaper deadlines.

3.0 Research Methodology

3.1 Research design

Quantitative approach was used by researchers to determine the level of

students satisfaction in Grade 7 Ilang- Ilang. A survey design was used for this study

where the researchers made a set of questions about the students satisfaction of

Grade 7 Ilang-Ilang answered by the Students

3.2 Research Locale

The study was conducted at Canumay West National High School in Kaypandan

Canumay West, Valenzuela City. Most of the respondents are live in the area of

Valenzuela City. The survey questionnaire was given to the Grade 7 students Ilang-

Ilang as a respondent of the study.

3.3 Population and Sampling

A Non-Probability Sampling Technique was established in this study specially

the purposive sampling. Purposive sampling as a technique wherein the researcher’s

uses good judgment and appropriate strategy in selecting the subjects who will meet

best the purposes of his study. The researchers intended to determine the level of

students satisfaction in Grade 7 ilang-Ilang, Canumay West National High Schoool, 10

students are selected as a respondent of the study at Grade 7 Ilang-Ilang, Kaypandan

Canumay West, Valenzuela City.

3.4 Research Ethics

The researchers are concern in selecting and using subjects is treating the

respondents ethically and responsibly. The guidelines in conducting a research was


guided by legal and ethical principle that centers the welfare of all respondent in the

approval research study. The researchers are obliged to follow research ethics in order

to construct and ethical research study. An informed consent was given to the

respondents of this study indicating the confidentiality of the study. All the

information entrusted to the researchers was used for the study purpose only.

3.5 Research Instruments

Survey forms will be use in data collection. Survey questionnaire is the

instrument used in this study. The questionnaire consists of closed ended questions

wherein the respondents chose among the given set of answers prepared by the

researchers. The said questionnaire was given to 10 selected students. This allows the

researchers to interpret the data in numerical and statistical form.

3.6 Data Collection

After selecting a specific students for the study, researchers collected data from

books in relation to the subject matter. The researchers also collect data from other

websites on the internet, and Libraries from Canumay West National High School.

Aside from the above, researchers also collect data from the respondents who

answered the questionnaire prepared by researchers and the data from questionnaire

is Students information

3.7 Data Analysis

The Data Analysis is the process of systematically applying statistical and

logical Techniques to describe and illustrates, condense and recap, and evaluate data

Frequency- It refers to the number of observations belonging to class interval (it is

reflection of tally)
The researchers focused on the questions that need to be answered, “Improving

the reading skills of Grade 7 Ilang-Ilang students in Canumay West National High

School by the help of Story Book ” and the demographic profile of the respondents.

Based on the answers the respondents are satisfied on the students because of the

services offered by the Grade 10 stundets Ilang-Ilang.

1. Demographic profile of the respondent in terms of:

a. Gender

There are 5 or 50% male respondents while 35 or 50% female

respondents

b. Age

There are 5 or 50% to 12 yrs old, 5 or 50% to 13 yrs old

c. Educational Attainment

There are 10 or 100% in Highschool,

2. The Level of Customer satisfaction

There are 100% of respondents are say Yes or very satisfied, 0% are No

or satisfied

6.0 Recommendation

Based on the results of the study answered in survey questionnaire the

students are satisfied in the services offer by the students of Grade 10 Nitrogen.

The results and observation of the study, should here as a starting point for the

researchers who would have similar field to study. The researchers recommend the

student of Grade 7 Ilang-Ilang to experience the quality of services. The researchers

also recommend to future researchers to have knowledge about the study of reading

skills

7.0 Conclusion
Based on the results of the study students are satisfied in terms of quality

services offers by the Grade 10 students of Ilang-Ilang , fast and efficient services,

overall information. Grade 10 students provides a variety of Reading Skills for its

Grade 7 students and it helps to enhance the Reading Skills strategy by the Grade 10

students of ilang-Ilang .
