Sally and Vanessa talk about money matters.

Instructions: Read the text aloud.

Sally: Hey, Vanessa.


Vanessa: Hi, Sally. Do you want a coffee?
Sally: Sure. I'll pay today. I just got my new credit card.
Vanessa: Oh really? What kind?
Sally: AXIS, it's perfect for traveling. I can get frequent flyer miles while I travel as
well.
Vanessa: Nice. When did you get it?
Sally: I just picked it up from the bank. The fees and charges are low too, only
$25 a year.
Vanessa: Wow, that's cheap! Having a credit card is a smart idea, especially when you
are traveling.
Sally: Yeah, I'm getting organized.
Vanessa: Look after it. It's valuable.
Sally: Yeah, I have to be careful. I don't want to lose it.
Vanessa: Imagine the frequent flyer miles you will get. Are you getting excited?
Sally: Very excited. I'm bringing a bit of cash for little things.
Vanessa: Well ... let's try out that credit card. I'll have a cappuccino and a muffin.

R Controlled Vowels

If a vowel is followed by an r, it creates another sound. These sounds are called r controlled
vowels.

These sounds are as follows:


• ar sound as in car, guitar, card, smart
• ir sound as in birth, girl
• or sound as in manor, author
• er sound as in butter, cutter, and mother

ir girl the back of the tongue moves upward so the sides of your tongue
sound push against the back side teeth (same as the r sound)

ar card the tongue is flat in your mouth, held middle-low creating an r


sound sound

or form the tip of the tongue rolls slightly up and back creating an r sound
sound

er serve the tongue is slightly rounded upward in the middle of the mouth
sound creating the r sound
