Descriptive Writing / Paragraph

Descriptive paragraphs can describe things to do in your city. You use Infinitives to make
writing more descriptive and interesting to read.

To write a descriptive paragraph you need:

A topic:
the person, place, or thing you want to write about
the opinion or observation that you will develop and support in the body sentences

Supporting Sentences:
background information to support your topic
descriptive details to develop your topic

Concluding Sentence:
summarize the idea in a different way
use words like in conclusion, all in all, or in summary to signal the ending

Examples:
• Topic sentence: Cambridge is a small town but there is so much to do.
Supporting Sentence: I like to go the galleries and museums on James Blvd.
Concluding Sentence: I love living in Cambridge.

Present Simple Tense for Descriptions

We use the Present Simple to talk about actions that happen again and again.
We use the Present Simple to talk about things that are true all the time.
We use the Present Simple to talk about feelings and thoughts.
We use the Simple Present in the interrogative form to ask questions.

Examples:
• Cambridge is a wonderful place to live.
• Salsa lessons are on Friday nights.
• I love this city.
• Do you like Cambridge?
• Is there a lot to do in Cambridge?
• What is your favorite part of the city?
