1. An aqueous solution contains 16.0 g of MgSO4 in 116 mL of solution. Calculate the

molarity of MgSO4 in the solution.

2. What is the molality of a solution made by dissolving 1.45 g of table sugar

(C12H22O11) in 30.0 mL of water (assuming the density of water is 1.00 g/mL)?

3. The density of a 25.0 mass % solution of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in water is 1.1783
g/mL.

a) What is the molarity of this solution?

b) What is the molality of this solution?

4. A 0.750 M solution of H2SO4 in water has a density of 1.046 g/mL. Express the
concentration in a) mole fraction, b) mass percent, and c) molality.

5. What mass in grams of a 0.500 m solution of sodium acetate (CH3CO2Na) in water

would be needed to obtain 0.150 mol of sodium acetate?

6. The chemical structures of pentane (C5H12) and 1-butanol (C4H9OH) are shown
below. Which of the two would you expect to be more soluble in water? Explain.

7. A can of coke open to air with a CO2 partial pressure of 4.0 x 10–4 atm has a CO2
concentration of 1.3 x 10–5 M at 25.0 oC. What is the concentration of CO2 if the
can is put under a CO2 pressure of 2.5 atm at 25.0 oC?

8. What is the vapor pressure (in mmHg) of the following solutions, each of which
contains a non-volatile solute? The vapor pressure of pure water at 45.0 oC is 71.93
mmHg.

a) A solution of 10.0 g of urea (CH4N2O) in 150.0 g of water at 45oC.

b) A solution of 10.0 g of LiCl in 150.0 g of water at 45.0 oC (assuming complete

dissociation).

9. Acetone (C3H6O) and ethyl acetate (C4H8O2) are both volatile organic liquids often
used as solvents. At 30 oC, the vapor pressure of acetone is 285 mmHg and the
vapor pressure of ethyl acetate is 118 mmHg. What is the vapor pressure (in mmHg)
at 30 oC of a solution prepared by dissolving 25.0 g of acetone and 25.0 g of ethyl
acetate?

10. Consider the following mixtures of liquids:

i) methanol (CH3OH) and n-butanol (CH3CH2CH2CH2OH)

ii) hexane (C6H14) and acetone (CH3(C=O)CH3)
iii) ethanol (CH3CH2OH) and water
iv) tetrachloromethane (CCl4) and octane (C8H18)
a) Which of the mixtures would be expected to show the most negative deviation
to the Raoult’s law?

b) Which of the mixtures would show the most positive deviation to the Raoult’s
law?

by dissolving 26.0 g of glucose (C6H12O6) in 285 g of ethyl alcohol has a boiling
point of 79.1 oC? The Kb for ethyl alcohol is 1.22 oC kg mol–1.

12. Assuming complete dissociation, how many grams of KBr was dissolved in 250.
mL of water if the resulting solution has a freezing point of –2.95 oC? The Kf of
water is 1.86 oC kg mol–1.

oC (K of water is 1.86 oC kg mol–1).
