FORMS OF TOURISM

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After completing this lesson, you are expected to:
1.determine potential forms of tourism that may be
developed in certain places;
2.distinguish the kinds of activities that can be offered
in a specific form of tourism; and
3.identify various markets that may be attracted to
each type of tourism.
Family Tourism
–tourism that caters to a family traveling together

Family destinations must have provisions for:


•family-friendly parking facilities;
•child-friendly, supervised play areas in airport terminals and bottle warmers;
•designated check-in desk for families traveling with young children;
•pre-boarding of aircraft for families with babies and young children; and
•baby stroller drop-off and collection from aircraft available at all airports.
Gap Tourism
•travel during a gap year

Gap year – a nominal period during which a person delays further education or
employment in order to travel (Millington 2005 in Lyons et al. 2011)
•includes gap tourists who are mostly backpackers

What Gap Tourists Need


•Good system of budget accommodation facilities
•Peaceful conditions

•People who are welcoming of visitors


•Good mass transportation system
Types of Gap Tourists

•Pre-university gappers – high school graduates before entering the university


•Post-university gappers – college graduates before they apply for
employment
•Career gappers – those taking a leave before a career or job change
•Pre-retirement gappers – 55–70-year-olds
Honeymoon
What honeymooners want:
•Privacy
•Luxurious dining
•Exclusive accommodation
•Stunning views
•Romantic settings
•Massage service

Senior Travel
–travel by people who are 60 years and older (age in Philippine context)

Why seniors are an important market group:


•Lots of free time on their hands
•Relatively affluent
•Free from most family and financial obligations
•Good market for slow tourism, pilgrimage, cruise, wellness, health and
medical tourism

Special Requirements
•Senior-friendly food, amenities, and services
•Wheelchairs
•Priority boarding and seating
Solo Female Travel
Solo female travelers are a good market for:
•all-female hotels;
•spas;
•designer bags;
•fashion items; and
•accessories.
Adventure Travel
–one that involves a certain amount of risk

Extreme tourism – a subset of adventure tourism that involves travel to


dangerous places or participation in dangerous events

Dark Tourism
–involves visits to areas with a history of horrific crimes, slavery, genocide,
torture, disasters, and accidents
Doom Tourism
•a.k.a. "Last Chance Tourism”
•involves traveling to places that are environmentally threatened (e.g., the
melting glaciers of Patagonia)
Medical and Wellness Tourism

Medical tourism – “involves people traveling to a different place to receive


treatment for a disease, an ailment, or a condition, or to undergo a cosmetic
procedure, and who are seeking lower cost of care, higher quality of care,
better access to care or different care than what they could receive at home”
Wellness tourism – “tourism [that] involves people who travel to a different
place to proactively pursue activities that maintain or enhance their personal
health and well-being, and who are seeking unique, authentic or location-
based experiences/therapies not available at home”
