TM 411 – Tourism Product Development

List of possible forms of tourism (theme) that can be developed by destinations, communities or tour
operators.

1. Family tourism – is a tourism that caters to family (parents and children) traveling together.
2. Gap tourism – tourism done during a leave from school, during a year between high school and
college or during the time between college graduation and full-time employment.
3. Honeymoon – a holiday taken by newly married couples, honeymooners prefer destinations
that provide luxurious dining, exclusive accommodation, stunning views and romantic settings.
4. Senior travel – tourism that provides a senior-citizen friendly services, such as healthy foods,
accommodation with accessible facilities, impeccable and polite service.
5. Solo female travel – tourism that caters mainly on successful single career woman, who visits
shopping malls and buys designer bags, fashion items, and accessories.
6. Adventure travel – one that involves a certain amount of risk.
7. Dark tourism – tourism that involves visits to areas with history of horrific crimes, slavery,
genocide, torture, disasters, and accidents.
8. Doom tourism – also known as “last chance tourism”, that involves traveling to places that are
environmentally threatened.
9. Medical and Wellness -traveling to a certain place to receive treatment.
10. Cultural tourism – tourism that is based on the cultural assets of the destination.
11. Religious tourism – place or area with well-known religious rituals, or famous churches.
12. Festival tourism – a hallmark event for a certain place, categorized into cultural, indigenous,
film, flower, religious and local produce.
13. Heritage tourism – tourism seeking, authenticity on historic sites/sights.
14. Cruise – leisure tourism on cruise ship.
15. Natural-based Tourism – tourism that relies on natural attractions.
16. Wildlife tourism – travel for appreciating wild animals in their natural habitat.
17. Ecotourism – form of sustainable tourism within a natural and cultural heritage area where
community participation, protection and management of natural resources, cultural and
indigenous knowledge and practices, environmental education and ethics as well as economic
benefits.
18. Rural Tourism – involves all tourist activities which take part in the rural areas.
19. Urban Tourism – sights in the cities, such as buildings, streetscapes, plazas, museums, art
galleries, theaters, restaurants, waterfront seas, clubs, and universities.
20. Slum or ghetto tourism – tourism that uses poverty as the main attraction.
21. Sports Tourism – destinations which caters tourist participating or watching a sports event.
