WELCOME TO PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF MANAGEMENT (MGT 1067Y)

This module is a 6-credit module and spread over 2 semesters.

1. AIMS OF THE MODULE

The aims of this module are to enable students to grasp basic management concepts and to
understand the role and functions of management in organisations and in relation to the
environment, both internal and external. Students will also gain an understanding of organisation
structure and function.

2. SYLLABUS OUTLINE

In this course, you will have the opportunity to get an overview of the different topics that will
be covered as follows:

The Environment of Organisations: evolution of management theory and concepts; functional


areas of management: Production, Finance, HR and Marketing, the managerial functions of
Planning, Leading, Organising, and Controlling; Managerial Skills.

Managing Individuals in Organisations: organisational behaviour; managing differences;


motivation; managing groups and teams; conflict and co-operation; power and politics;
leadership.

Managing Structure and Processes: organisational structure; job design; restructuring and
Change, communications; Change.

• discuss about managerial skills, roles and functions

• explore the impact of key environmental factors on management such as decision making and
organisational behaviour

• discuss about the significance of contemporary issues in business and management.

Online participation: 5% marks. Activities pertaining to every unit/ chapter are included on the
Moodle platform.

A minimum of 30% should be attained in each of continuous assessment and written


examination, with an overall total of 40% for you to pass a module. Scoring less than 40% at the
end of the year will require the student to re-sit for the module.
