Balaki Ko ‘Day Samtang Gasakay Ta’g Habalhabal

Author: Adonis G. Durado

Balaki ko day
Samtang gasakay ta‟g habalhabal.
Idat-ol og samut
Kanang imong dughan
Nganhi sa akong bukobuko
Aron mas mabatyagan ko ang hinagubtob
Sa imong kasingkasing.
Sa mga libaong nga atong malabyan.
Gaksa ko paghugot
Sama sa lastikong
Mipungpong sa imong buhok.
Ug sa kainit sa imong ginhawa
Gitika kining akong dughan.
Ang mga balili unya
Nga naghalok sa „tong batiis
Isipon tang kaugaligong mga dila.
Dayon samtang nagakatulin
Kining atong dagan,
Mamiyong tag maghangad
Ngadto sa kawanangan
Aron sugaton ang taligsik
Sa uwan, dahon, ug bulak.
My English Translation

Recite to me a poem, Miss

While we are riding a habal-habal.
Come closer, and lean your chest
Harder on my back
So that I may feel
The beatings of your heart, better.
With every pothole that we come across,
Hug me tight
Just as tight as
The rubber bands
That ties your hair together.
And with the warmth of your breath,
Tickle my heart.
And those amorseco
That kiss our legs,
Let us think of it as our very tongues.
Then, while our ride
Speeds up,
Let us close our eyes,
And we gaze up towards the sky
To welcome the mild shower
of rain, leaves, and flowers.
My Filipino Translation

Bigkasin sa akin, binibini

Ang isang tula habang tayo‟y
Nakasakay sa habal-habal.
Halika‟t lumapit pa,
At ilapat nang maigi ang „yong dibdib
Dito sa aking likuran
At nang mas maigi kong maramdaman
Ang mga pintig ng iyong puso.
Sa bawat butas na kalsada
Na ating madaraanan,
Ako‟y iyong mahigpit na yakapin
Kasing higpit nang tali
Na syang gumagapos ng iyong buhok.
At sa init ng iyong hininga,
Kilitiin mo ang aking puso.
At ang mga damo
Na humahalik sa ating mga binti,
Ating isipin na tila ating mga dila.
At pagkatapos,
Habang tumutulin ang ating takbo,
Ating ipikit ang ating mga mata‟t
Tumingin sa himpapawid
Upang salubungin ang ambon
Ng ulan, mga dahon, at bulaklak.
Explanation

In my translation, in both the English and Filipino version, I have used some of the literary
translation techniques namely the Linguistic Amplification, Adaptation, and Borrowing.

For the Linguistic Amplification technique wherein I used in translating the line
“Balaki ko day” into the English version which is, ” Recite to me a poem, Miss” and Filipino
version, “Bigkasin sa akin, binibini ang isang tula”

According to its definition, linguistic amplification is “about using a paraphrase to explain a

word that has no equivalent in the target language. Now in this particular line, I used
linguistic amplification for the word “balaki” which I used the paraphrase, “You recite a
poem” because there is no particular equivalence of the word in the target languages.

On the other hand, for the term “day” which I used the Adaptation technique by using
equivalent words such as “miss” and “binibini” in the English and Filipino language
respectively.

Next technique I used was the Borrowing technique, wherein I just borrowed the word
“habal-habal” from the source language text into the two translated versions.
