Acknowledgement
I would like to express my profound gratitude to everyone,
who provided insight and expertise that greatly assisted my
career choices, plan, and helped me in the making of this
portfolio possible;

To Ms. Agar F. Quintana and Mr. Marc John Rivera for sharing
their pearls of wisdom and sincere patience and guidance that
helped me throughout the semester. Without their guidance and
persistence, this project would not have been possible;

To my friends, classmates, relatives and parents, who in one

way or another shared their support, either morally, spiritually,
financially and physically during this period of deciding my
future;

And above all, to God Almighty, the author of knowledge and

wisdom, for giving me strength, wisdom, knowledge, and countless
love that helped me overcome all the challenges and difficulties
all along the way.

How do you envision your
future self?
15 years from now, I see
myself wearing a white lab
coat doing my rounds in the
hospital as a physician
starting small, gaining some
experience in hospitals
around Cebu City and in time,
go back to my humble town of
San Fernando to visit my
family—and my wife hopefully.
Right now, I do not have any
definite plans on what
specialization I might take
up after medical school but
no matter what my choice will
be, I know for sure that I
would share my knowledge and
skills without being greedy
for money as it is a form of
giving back to the society.

II. Define where you are now?

Personal Core Values

Freedom. Above all, I want to be free in my thinking and doing:

ad libertatem naturae!

chievement. The path of skill development toward mastery is what

AI live for. I always try to be a better version of myself every

day.

Hedonism. Thinking, working, training, non-doing, and non-

thinking are my main sources of pleasure. I am obsessed with
productivity!

B enevolence. I always choose to be kind with people around me. I

try my best to do good deeds and offer my aid to everyone.

W ork. I value work because as a future doctor I want to help as

much people as I can.

F riends. As a person, a friend’s support is the source of my

confidence, and I want me to be the source of theirs.

F
amily. The thing I value the most: family. It provides me
with love and provides setting for my personal growth. In a
way that I share my life’s joys and sorrows with them. And
the thought that someone always believes in me, when others
don’t.

9
Personal Strengths and Interests

Strengths:

T
rying to decide what my personal strengths are is hard.
For me personally, I have grown in my strengths, and I’ve
experienced my weaknesses. My personal strengths consist
of: positivity, compassionate, confident, and humility. I
pick these four because I feel that I am truly strongest in these
aspects of my life.

Being positive is a big factor in everything I do. I always

want to be happy and joyful to make others feel the way I do. I
want others to appreciate life and to feel any kind of uplift in
their spirit. Positivity plays into encouragement. I make it my
goal to make others feel better about their selves.

I spent a lot of time thinking if being compassionate is

strength or a weakness. But true strength, is gentle and fair.
Compassion is my strength; it is an innate character trait of
mine that I don’t think I would ever change. It allows me to
understand others and see that we are more alike than different.

The more self-confident I become, the more I can, accept,

handle, learn, and gain in everything that I do. Self-esteem has
given me control and free from self-doubt.

Along with confidence, humility is a complementary pair. It

helps me to build stronger trust and it facilitates learning,
which are the key aspects to personal development or growth.

Interest:

M
y personal interest are doing things that have
anything to do with ideas and thinking. For example, I
like solving puzzles or read a book, anything to keep
my mind busy. I am also fond of searching for fun
facts online to answer my out-of-the-blue question that just
popped out of my head.

Personal Factors affecting your career choice
Since I was a kid, I’ve always dreamed of becoming a physician.
When I was in 3rd grade I immediately fell in love with science.
For me it was interesting, and not to brag but I’m really good at
it. I’ve joined a couple of contests and won. I’ve never won
anything before. It felt good. Science gave me the
confidence like when you find your true self. I
became interested in saving human lives, I feel like
that’s my calling, my purpose.

I always used to hear that Medicine was a

difficult and challenging field and that dealing with
a human life is not easy. Any seven year-old would
back out and rethink his/her dream, but not me. This
made me further think to accept this formidable
field. I always love a challenge. And this is why I
am looking forward to medicine as my profession.

External factors affecting your career choice

During my teenage years, I was constantly bombarded with the
question "What do you want to do with the rest of your life? How
do I envision myself in the future?" To many this might seem
daunting, but ever since I realized that I would pursue medical
career, my mind has been made up. I want to be a physician. I
don't wish to be the wealthiest or highly graduated doctor the
country has ever seen, but I want to be the one who will serve
the people and the country in a true manner. I believe there is
no feeling more gratifying than knowing that I have impacted an
individual's life in a positive manner. I will keep this goal as
my focus throughout my college life, because it is a goal worth
putting on a pedestal.

My passion for helping others and love for my country

equally contribute to my dream of becoming a physician in the
Philippines. I am fully aware that becoming a doctor involves
dedication to my field of interest and many years of hard work,
diligence and motivation. With mental strength and perseverance I
have gained through my life experiences, I am fully equipped to
conquer each and every obstacle standing in my way.

Life goals

16
I know everyone should have a goal in their life that they
are striving to get to. Personally I have a lot of goals that I
would like to reach throughout my life:

My first goal is to keep God first. I learned that you can

do nothing without Him. No matter how hard you may try, or keep
him out, you can't. God is a big part of my life and I take him
with me wherever I go. That's what everyone should do. My second
goal is to go the best college the Cebu City could offer. The
second that I graduate High School, I would like to go to
University of the Philippines and learn to be a doctor. I like to
help and give people good advice to help them with their life. My
third goal is to publish some of my written works someday. May
these works touch and inspire people.

If I reach all of my goals stated above, it would be a great

success in my life. It’s one way of me feeling fulfilled. I would
love to help everyone, whether it’s from donating to charity or
inspire them. That is one of my topmost goals in my life.

Things that you are passionate about

One thing that I’m really passionate about is
pursuing a medical career. I guess my love for science
and the human body was the initial spark for me to
pursue this field.

I find it particularly important because with so

much misinformation about science and medicine today.
If people are being exposed to science literacy early
on, people will be able to build a stronger foundation
of knowledge and to ask valuable conditions to their
health. Most importantly, they’ll be able to
differentiate myths from evidence-based facts. I want
to be a part of making it happen.

As a future physician, I look forward to implement

social changes, and I can’t wait for the thousands of
lives I can save and change.

III. What is out there?

Research for the list of CHED priority courses and

TESDA priority industries and occupations, and check if
you’re preferred course/s/is/are/there.
My heart is set to take BS Biology as my Pre-med course.
According to Belle Mapa(2018), If I wanted a general approach to
medicine, this is the course to take. BS Biology students learn
all about living things from body structure and functions down to
cellular makeup. I’ll be immersed in all that through our
laboratory and lecture classes. This course will test my memory
skills and study habits.

Reflect on the results of your RIASEC assessment
Holland’s RIASEC model was developed by John L. Holland, as
the core idea for his theory of vocational personalities and work
environment. In the core idea of the theory, it is considered
that the majority of people can be represented by a combination
of six personality types: Realistic, Investigative,
Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and conventional. Each type of
personality stands for a constellation of interests, beliefs,
values and characteristics.

In taking the RIASEC assessment, it suggests that I am more

suitable in an Investigative occupation. Along with the other 10
recommended professions, it’s the medical career that got my
interest. This gave me the confidence that I do belong in the
medical field. Everything in me: personality, values, interest,
passion, and goals. All point in the same direction. Which is to
be a successful doctor someday.

19
Research on the course you are interested in and the list of
subjects offered (prospectus)

20
21
Research on school that offer the course you are most
interested in.
After searching for Colleges who offers BS biology, I found 8
schools in Cebu City:

 Southwestern University
 Velez College
 Cebu Normal University
 University of San Carlos
 University of San Jose-Recoletos
 University of Visayas
 University of the Philippines
 Cebu Institute of Technology University

22
IV. Conduct Consultations
Consult your parents about your thoughts on your career plans.

Talk to one of your teachers to get feedback on what they think

about the possible career, course, and school you are

23
considering.

24
V. Validate your preferences with your personal core
values
1.Is my career choice aligned with my core values or
will there be some future conflict that will make
me unhappy?
My career choice, which is, to be a doctor is aligned to my
core values. Based on my beliefs I am positive that being a
physician is my calling.

First, is the part of me that values achievements and work.

The first measure of a great physician is excellence in clinical
judgment: the accuracy of diagnostic methods, the thoroughness of
approach, and the effectiveness of proven clinical decision-
making principles. Meaning, in my work I will always do my best
to serve and strive for perfection, because there are no rooms
for errors in medicine.

Second, is benevolence. This personality of mine drives my

profession with love for humanity. A great physician, despite the
hardships never loses love for his or her patients. Compassion is
a core value of humanity as a species, and it is the primary fuel
for my mission. I believe that connection is the fundamental
basis for healing.

One of the future conflicts that I will have to encounter in

the future is my freedom. Doctors are usually very busy. They
spend most of their time in hospitals. This scares me because
what if I don’t have any free time for my friends and family? To
be honest, I don’t know how to answer that question. But I will
do my best to balance these things. I promise.

2.What are the gaps or disagreements between my

values and my career references?
The only thing that would hinder me with my career is the
thought of not getting to spend with my family and friends as
often. Becoming a doctor, means I will sacrifice most of my
social life, and the thought of that breaks my heart. It’s hard
choosing between career and my family. But in the future,
somehow, I’ll make it work.

25
3.Are my preferences aligned with
your life goals? What are the
disagreements or discrepancies?
What could be the causes of
disagreements?
My life goals and preferences are in
fact aligned with each other. My drive
to pursue a medical career will be
strengthen through my faith in God. My
dream school which is the University of
the Philippines will give me advantages
in the field because I know they
produce the best doctors in the
country. The problem is, will I ever
write a story, or finish my novel? With
all of the uncertainties I have about
med school it sounds impossible to have
a time to write. But like I always say,
“I’ll figure it out.”

IV. Craft your career statement.

The journey of becoming a doctor is not
easy. It takes years and years of hard
work and dedication. When I was young, I
thought doctors are allowed to work when
they turn 30 or something. That and the
uncertainty of the steps to become a
doctor scares me. So to feel a little
better I made a career goal timeline to
help me keep track on what to do next.

26
VI. Activities

A. Personal SWOT Analysis

B. Johari Window

27
C. BASIC PH
Beliefs and Values. There are times when I doubt my own
capabilities. I purposefully think lowly of myself to avoid the
feeling of disappointment. But when I share my mom about this,
she always tries to cheer me up. This really helps me back on my
feet and restores my confidence. I always know that my mother
will always have my back and believes in me, even if others do
not.
Affect and Emotions. When I experience traumatic stress, may
it be from school presentations or witnessing an accident it will
be very best for me to express my feelings through writing.
Because sometimes writing something from a very terrible thing
that happened alleviates the stress that I’m feeling.
Social Roles. When I was having a hard time keeping up with
the due dates of the tasks given, I was feeling very exhausted
because It was like the fourth night that I pulled an all-
nighter. However, If my friends are with me (virtually via
Discord) It helps me feel motivated, and that I am not alone in
this. If my friends are around, it is a great help for me.
Imagination. If I am under emotional stress, I tend to drown
myself in books. When things like this happened, I feel like the
real world is too much and very difficult. Thus I immersed myself
in books where each of them is a portal for something fun and
adventure that could help me forget about the real world for a
while.
Cognition. Whenever I join a contest my anxiety will go
overdrive. It’s because I don’t have any idea if what I did was
enough and I’m genuinely just afraid of the unknown. However,
learning how to accept the results either way will be beneficial
for your growth. For example, you lost a competition and it’s not
a time for feeling bad about yourself but to evaluate what you
did wrong so you could be better next time. It’s always come down
to what you’ve learned from the experience.
Physical. Whenever I feel self-conscious about my body I
always try to work out or run in the morning. I feel like this
sometimes, but not because I am bullied or something, it’s
because I want myself to be in a better shape. It can also
improve my mood because It releases endorphins.

28
IV. Penzu Journal Entries

A.Unit 1: Getting to know Oneself

3 things that I like about me: number one, I am a book nerd.
My love for books helps me appreciate self-study because reading
alone and learning from it is what I was doing since I was a kid.
I believe it had a huge contribution on my capacity to focus on
one thing for a long time. The second thing that I like about
myself is that I’m open-minded. For example, I am an ally for
LGBTQ+ community for I believe they should be treated equal and
love always wins. In addition, I am very open to new
perspectives; I will never ignore an idea or opinion just because
it is different from mine. In doing so, I can learn new things
from other people. The third one is my ability to adapt and be
compatible with everyone. I’m one of those people who would
pretend to be someone else just to be liked. I know that sounds
like a bad thing, but it is actually a good trait for us
extroverts. We observe and adapt to our surroundings for
survival. I guess you could say that these characteristics have
made me unique and who am I today.

Now for the difficult part, I have a lot of things I don’t

like about myself, and if I write it all down we’re going to be
here all day. And so, let’s just name three. The first thing I
despise about myself is that I never ask for help. I want to do
things alone. This is the part of me where I most wanted to see
improved. I should not carry the entire burden and let my friends
in. The second thing is I am a perfectionist. Some of my friends
resent me because I correct them every single time. However, some
do appreciate being corrected, I mean who doesn’t? This
personality of mine is a blessing and a curse at the same time. I
always strive for perfection and it’ll be only a matter of time
before I snap. The third thing is I try to control things that
are out of my control. However, later on in life I realized and
accept that the universe will throw thing on you, instead of
being frustrated on what I can’t control is inefficient and
futile. Where in fact, not being in control doesn’t make me
powerless, it just means I have to focus my power and control it
in a different way. Seeing all of my flaws, I can’t help but to
accept it and hope I can learn from these, and change them, to be

29
the happiest,
badassiest version of
myself.

30
B.Unit 2: Affirmation Letter

31
C. Unit 3: Power of Vulnerability

I consider myself as an introvert. Thus it is hard for me to

connect with someone. It will take me an inordinate amount of
time to meet new friends. In Brené Brown’s The Power of
Vulnerability Ted Talk video she shows how fear can interfere
with creating connections. This is when things start to just
click for me. I am afraid because I know I’m not worthy of
anyone, except myself. She continued saying, “the one thing that
keeps us out of connection is the fear that we’re not worthy of
connection.” To compensate for my lack of self-esteem, I pretend
to be someone I’m not. But the one thing I did wrong when I was
young is that we should let go of who we thought we should be, in
order to be who we are, which is very essential for connection.

The word for it is authenticity. We should have the courage

to be our imperfect selves so we could be seen, really seen, our
flaws and all. Some are afraid of being vulnerable, and so they
are used to this façade that they created, and have been wearing
for years because of the fear of being judged or rejected. It was
in the talk where I learned that we should have the compassion to
be kind to ourselves first and then to others. Because as it
turns out, we can’t practice compassion with other people, If we
can’t treat ourselves kindly. We should learn to accept that in
order to find the connection that we’re looking for is through
embracing vulnerability.

It’s ok to express ourselves. It doesn’t mean we’re weak. In

fact, being vulnerable makes us beautiful. Therefore, I’ll try to
open myself to some people: share my problems with friends,
confess my love for the girl I like, and be more social in
parties. I want to do stuff where there are no guarantees.  This
lesson has taught me about how I should live and love in my life.
When I was young, I would punch my pillow and shriek like I was
on fire before I present myself as vulnerable. It was this time I
learned the power of vulnerability: the bridge for deep
connections.

32
D. Unit 4: My Journey towards Personal Development
The PWB (Psychological Well-Being) Scale has six subscales: Autonomy
(e.g., “I have confidence in my opinions, even if they are contrary to
the general consensus”); Environmental Mastery (e.g., “In general, I
feel I am in charge of the situation in which I live”); Personal
Growth (e.g., “I think it is important to have new experiences that
challenge how you think about yourself and the world”); Positive
Relations With Others (e.g., “People would describe me as a giving
person, willing to share my time with others”); Purpose in Life (e.g.,
“Some people wander aimlessly through life, but I am not one of
them”); and Self-acceptance (e.g., “When I look at the story of my
life, I am pleased with how things have turned out”).

Instructions: Choose one response below each statement to

indicate how much you agree or disagree.

1. “I like most parts of my personality.” Agree

life.” Disagree

17. “I have confidence in my own opinions, even if they are

different from the way most other people think.” Agree

18. “I judge myself by what I think is important, not by the

values of what others think is important.” Agree

Count the statements you have answered: Strongly Disagree, and

look into ways for you to cope up with these kinds of
experiences.

From the questions above, I answered “disagree” to 4 questions.

Here are the ways I cope with it.

“I have not experienced many warm and trusting relationships with

others.”

-I disagree because, yes, I am an introvert and I like to be left

alone in my own devices. However, I still create strong
friendships and express my love to them in my own way. I guess
the thing to improve on this is to be more social with others.
Like get out of my comfort zone and take a few risks so that I’ll
widen my circle of friends.

“I gave up trying to make big improvements or changes in my life

a long time ago”

-I disagree because my life is a process, and still is. I think

I’ll never stop improving as well as changing. With a lot of

34
tough challenges I encounter every day, I am a better person
compared to the person I was yesterday.

“I sometimes feel as if I’ve done all there is to do in life.”

-I disagree because I still have a lot of plans for my life:

Study hard to get a high paying job (one that I love of course),
be financially stable, tour the world, and start a family and
settle. There is so much I want to do and experience in life that
I sometimes felt like one lifetime is enough.

“I live life one day at a time and don’t really think about the
future.”

-I disagree because I am a very anxious person. I always think

ahead because I am genuinely afraid of not knowing what’s the
next thing that’s going to happen. What I’m doing right now, is
for the sole purpose of what’s going to be my tomorrow or future.
For example, I study very hard to get my dream job.
