Answer ALL questions

1. A pneumatic PI temperature controller has an output pressure of 10 psig when the
set point and process temperature coincide. The set point is suddenly increased by
10 ° F (i.e., a step change in error is introduced), and the following data are
obtained: [8 Marks]

Determine the actual gain (psig/° F) and the integral time.

2. Consider the process with two different disturbance d 1 and d2 as shown in Fig. 1
[15 Marks]
Construct a cascade control system for the process and draw its block diagram.
Compute the offset of the closed loop response to a unit step change in d 2 (both
primary and secondary controllers are p- controllers)

3. Why provision for Anti- integration Windup is necessary for process with P-I-D
control? Explain with appropriate diagram.

SET2

1. The input error signal to the PI controller changes stepwise with a magnitude of 2
and the controller ouput (C’) changes as given in Fig. 1. Find the values of controller
gain (Kc) and integral time constant (Ti)

2. Consider the feedback loop having the following transfer functions:
[15 marks]

e 0.5s
G p  Getd s  ; G f  Gm  1
0.8s  1
Although the model is perfectly known the dead time, t d value is wrongly
determined as 0.45 min. Discuss the impact of dead-time on the effectiveness of
Smith predictor when the process operates under P-only controller with Kc=30.
