Cape # 2 I have with the assistance of site

Instructional Leadership administrators, MTSS committee, and our
department chairs created a Student Athlete
Intervention Process for coaches to follow to
help students achieve success in the
classroom.

Every school site is different. Westminster

High School is no different. My role as
Athletic Director is not limited to eligibility of
athletes, schedules of teams, management of
coaches, and overviewing the operations of
the athletic department, the needs of our
student-athletes require me to also be an
academic success administrator.
Distance/hybrid learning has proven to be
problematic for the success of our students,
and in response I created a comprehensive
student intervention process. The process is
focused on two aspects, removing the
anonymity that online learning creates and to
create accountability. This program was
implemented shortly after the completion of
the first quarter, and has been showing signs
of success up to this point. I am excited to
see how academic success improves at
semester grades.

Online learning necessitated clear

communication with our staff on the
resources available to them and to our
students, but not having teachers on campus
exposed the teachers lack of knowledge and
how to access these resources. Together
with another Assistant principal we created a
site resource guide. The resource guide is
aimed at provide contact information for all
resources available on campus that are there
to ensure teacher and student success.

Covid-19 and its impact on education has

exposed the importance of clear and concise
information to students and family. As district
athletic directors we came to realize that our
normal process of communication regarding
academic eligibility, required health
screening, district parent policy’s, and
COVID-19 protocols was lacking.
Traditionally this information is communicated
via back to school night and team meetings.
Those opportunities are not there this year.
As district athletic directors we created a
video outlining required information to
participate in athletics at our schools. There
are two videos, one that includes COVID
information and one that does not. The
second video will be used for years to come
to ensure we communicate with our
communities clearly.

The most determining factor for being an

effective leader is to have consistent
processes. Dr. Muhammad’s symposium this
year was eye-opening in the systematic
approach he advocates for changing the
culture of a school site. There is often a
change of leadership due to an actual or
perceived shortcoming of the organization
and having a plan on how to address
changing a culture is critical to the future
success of any leader.

Every district has somewhere in their mission

statement a reference to student
achievement. It is in fact the purpose of
education, the education of students. What
happens if a teacher is not fulfilling that
district mission statement? There is no
learning in their classroom? Researching
evaluation procedures across two districts,
and in a greater sense California Ed Code
has been eye-opening to me in terms of
removing a sub-par teacher from a
classroom. I know as a future administrator,
teacher evaluation is a key part of the job and
having gone through a Mock evaluation
process for CalAPA and now this research
paper, I feel like I understand the processes
which in terms will make me a better
advocate for students education.
