Parent Letter
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this letter finds you and your family healthy and excited for the new school year.
I am thrilled to be working with your student this year. My name is Ms. Meyer, and I will be
your child’s teacher for this school year. I am a graduate of Grand Valley State University’s
honors program. While at Grand Valley, I studied Group Social Studies, History, and
Secondary Education. As part of my education, I spent time in a Social Studies Elective
classroom at Grand Rapids Montessori High, which is part of the Grand Rapids Public School
District.
I plan on helping your child learn and grow through an inquiry-based curriculum with
student-guided projects throughout the year. I believe strongly that diverse perspectives
are critical in the curriculum and classroom, and I seek to bring as many perspectives into
the classroom as I can throughout the year. As a part of this, I would love to have parents
visit throughout the year and share their perspectives and histories. I would highly
encourage discussing with your students what they are learning in my classroom.
We will be exploring online tools to study Social Studies as well, which will include online
simulation experiences of historical events and game-based instruction on civics. If you wish
to explore these technologies at home before your student sees them in class, you may find
them by searching for MissionUS (https://www.mission-us.org/play/) and iCivics
(https://www.icivics.org/). These are incredible tools that will bring historical events and
civics to life for your student.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this letter. I am available by email anytime between
8 am and 9 pm, and I will do my best to respond as quickly as possible. I am available by
phone as well, but I prefer email for communication. You may also contact me anytime
through my professional website, w ww.meyermaryedu.weebly.com. I will be updating the
same website with class events and communications as well, so keep that page
bookmarked!
To close, I want to share a quote that I live by: “When you can’t run, walk. When you can’t
walk, crawl. When you can’t crawl, find someone to carry you.”
I am always happy to help with any questions or concerns you have throughout the school
year.
Sincerely,
Ms. Mary Meyer
