Statement of purpose
The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)
As a Latin American woman, I have multicultural roots and with vision very wide of the world., my
curiosity about the sciences, and especially my profound respect for multicultural
experiences and diversity. I was born and raised in a town of Antioquia, EL Bagre. I lived there until I
Medellín- Antioquia. My experience started as a volunteer working in my municipality with young adults,
teaching them about different topics including education. This has helped me stayed active in my field of
study and committed to working on achieving my goals and fulfilling my dreams. As many Latinas and
suffered in special ways as a result of the stridently machista character of our sub-cultures;
Therefore, as a woman and a mathematician, I have the responsibility to show that women
the role of women in society and Latina's challenges as students of exact sciences
I started my mathematics degree at the University of Antioquia a year and a half after
graduating from high school. Of course, that year and a half I studied English and other subjects. At the
same time, I was looking for scholarships and other funding options to be able to pay for all my needs
while in school, in another town and far from home. what it was going to cost me financially to go to
university at that time for being the daughter of a couple of peasants with no money. In the end , I was
able to get a scholarship for good academic performance during my time at school. I started taking classes
at the university and my parents were happy, I breaking my family standards by being the first woman to
Many things changed for everyone at that moment. My father died during my second year at the
university and that brought a lot of changes to my life and my mother's. I had to start working and looking
a small business where I helped school children with their math homework.
When I started working, I already had little time to study. In addition, my career has always
been very difficult and some of the teachers are not so kind to women. I went through the sad days; I did
not have time to assimilate to my father's death and I was also dealing with a lot of school related stress.
Many times, I wanted to not finish what I had started, University, since I came to believe that I had no
opportunity in the and that my aspirations were very high knowing my family roots.
But not all moments were l sad and overwhelming, at that time I made good friends at the
University and many families welcomed my business, thus being able to live many experiences. That's
why my Wanda business was my salvation at that time and it's my best personal project right now.
Other experiences that have helped me grow as a person. It was during my time in Caucasia, I was in
social groups defending the rights of different vulnerable communities, and I began to value my role as a
At the time of the pandemic, I was able to explore the multiple fields of action of the mathematics
undergraduate degree and I decided to focus on statistics, finance and computational mathematics. Since
degree work in Machine Learning applied in MLOps and I have a beautiful life in this city,
where I have met wonderful people and I continue working to pay for my degree and help
at home.
I still want to grow in all fields. I want to get a degree in applied computational mathematics at
the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) because I am convinced that your program is in the optimal
area for preparing me for a lifetime of service in the sciences, especially for women and population with
low economic resources. I see special business initiatives that are targeted to women around the world,
and especially mothers and youth who are especially hopeful to shield the next generation as much as
I am enthusiastic about new community scientific (mathematics) that are emerging in the area of
programming that are dedicated to help the sciences in different topics, especially in the statistics field. I
am convinced that the master in Computational and Applied Mathematics at the Rochester Institute of
and long-term aspirations with math and the application of the same.
The Master’s Program in Computational and Applied Mathematics will provide me with the
optimal tools to help me study scientific careers and thus overcome barriers and free myself from old
beliefs so that I can follow my true passions and make the decision to live the world of sciences as a life
option. I want to contribute to the scientific world in the best way, which for me is giving way to other
women to be mathematicians, physicists, chemists, etc. and thus be able to achieve higher levels of
education. I am a firm believer in lifelong education and I want to constantly grow professionally,
emotionally, and spiritually in celebration of our multicultural work environment. I want to help people
make decisions career wise. This is why I want to become a professional in sciences
and mathematics, working in the education sector and at companies of different levels,
growing with my mathematical consulting company that today is called Wanda and it is
the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is the key to the realization of my professional
aspirations.
