MASTERS IN COMPUTATIONAL AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS.

As a Latin American woman whit multicultural roots and whit vision very wide of the
world in her outlook, my greatest strengths include my open mind, my high adaptability,
curiosity about the sciences, and especially my profound respect for multi-cultural
experiences and diversity. I was born and raised in a town of de Antioquia whose is its
name EL Bagre until I turned 17 and moved to Caucasia-Antioquia and actually I live in
Medellin- Antioquia in Colombia. My experiences have come together since that time to
keep me very engaged with me very committed and active with my area (mathematics), my
dreams and my human part. As whit many Latinas and women in sciences, we have
suffered in special ways as a result of the stridently machista character of our sub-cultures;
Therefore, as a woman and a mathematician, I have the responsibility to show that women
can contribute to science and do science. And I hope to contribute to a greater awareness of
the role of us in society and problems of Latinas as student of exact sciences in the faculties
and outside of our academic programs.
I started my mathematics career at the University of Antioquia a year and a half after
graduating of school. Of course, that year and a half I studied English and other topics,
while I was looking for studentship or options to be able to pay for everything that I will
going cost at the university in the moment for I for being peasants' daughters out of money.
In another town and far from home. In the end I was able to get a studentship for good
academic performance during my time at school. I started the university and my parents
were happy, I was the first in the family, apart from I was a woman who I went to
university breaking the family culture, I would also be studying a career in exact sciences.
There were many changes for everyone in that moment. My parent died in the second year
of university and that brought a lot changes in my life and my mother's. I had to start
working and I look other for ways to support my university and be a help at home. I started
a small business where I helped kids of the school’s whit math and your homework.
When I started working, I already had little time to study. In addition, my career has always
been very difficult and the teachers who teach it was few kinds with the women and I went
through sad days, plus the death of my father and that I did not have time assimilated.
Many times, I wanted to not finish university, since I came to believe that I had no
opportunity in that area and that aspired very high knowing my family roots.
But it was not all sad and overwhelming moments, at that time I made good friends at the
University and with my business many families welcomed me, thus being able to live many
experiences. During my time in Caucasia, I was in social groups defending the rights of
different vulnerable communities and I began to value my role as a woman in society and in
academia.
At the time of the pandemic, I was able to explore the multiple fields of action of the
mathematics undergraduate degree and I decided focus on the area of statistics, finance and
the computational area of mathematics. And since 2021 I lived in Medellin but now, I study
mathematics at the main campus of University of Antioquia. I am currently doing my
degree work in Machine Learning applied in MLOps and I have a beautiful life in this city
where I have met wonderful people and I continue working to pay for my studies and help
at home, but also, I still want to grow in all fields.
I want to study the master for an advanced degree in computational mathematics and
applied because I am convinced that your program is in the optimal area for preparing me
for a lifetime of service to the sciences, especially for women and population with low
economic resources. I see special business initiatives that are targeted to women in all the
world, and especially mothers and youths who are especially hopeful to shield the next
generation as much as possible from the abysmal social problems or gender discrimination.
I am enthusiastic about new forms of community scientific that are emerging that are
dedicated to counseling of the sciences and applications in the different spheres, especially
in the computational field. I am convinced that the master in Computational and Applied
Mathematics of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is best tailored to my interests
and long-term aspirations with math and its applied.
The Master's Program in Computational and Applied Mathematics will provide me with the
optimal tools to help women study scientific careers and thus overcome barriers and free
themselves from old beliefs so that they can follow their true passions and make the
decision to live the world of sciences as a life option. I want to contribute to the scientific
world in the best way, which for me is giving way to other women to be math, physics,
chemistry, etc. and thus be able to achieve higher levels of education. I am a firm believer
in lifelong education and I want to constantly grow professionally, emotionally, and
spiritually in celebration of our multicultural work environment. I want to help people learn
to choose how to live their lives. This is why I want to become a professional in sciences
and mathematics, working at in sector of the education and companies of different levels
and growing with my mathematical consulting company that today is called Wanda and it is
my greatest source for motivating others to study mathematics.
I am convinced that the Master's Program in Computational and Applied Mathematics of
the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is the key to the realization of my professional
aspirations.
