FAMILIARIZE
Read the essay written by two foreign students from Vietnam who are now studying in the Philippines
and answer the questions that follow.

I am Nguyen Anh Bang. I am 18 years old and I finished my middle school at HUTECH
University and here is my friend, Le Tuan Dat. He is 20 years old and he finished his middle school at
NTTU in Viet Nam. Today we will share to you some ideas about “How Vietnamese People Communicate
together in their Workplace and in Academic Setting.

First, we would like to share about the Vietnamese behavior and workplace. We are
allowed to most things with the staff, friends, and even with the boss but you need to keep your respect
with them. For example, when you want to borrow stuff from your team/friend, you cannot tell them
that you will do it because you are in a high position if you will impose, he may succeed but that maybe
the first and last time. In case you really want to borrow some stuff, you are expected to speak gently
and politely so that they will grant your request. Overall, in our observation, one is expected to always
speak gently with a staff or teammates. You cannot make people feel or think that you are higher than
them so you can do whatever you want.

In the academic setting, whenever Vietnamese students meet some of their teachers or
teachers that they do not know, they first smile and nod their head to show their respect. Along with
these, teachers should also do similar things to their students. In class, students commonly stand-up to
give salute when their teacher comes into or go out of the classroom. This is an ethical standard which
preceding generations have done so far. In addition, teachers do not only teach their students about
lessons in books but also everything in their environment. They communicate kindly and want their
students to have enough knowledge to overcome any situation in life. For all these reasons, the relation
is immensely good between teachers and student in Viet Nam. It’s up to you if you comprehend and
cultivate your teacher’s lessons, then you may win your teacher’s attention. Personally, we have known
a teacher who is an English teacher at Vietnam Australia International School. She’s the best example of
an ideal teacher. I really appreciate whatever things she has done for me until now and we will always
remember her lessons in English as well as the way she communicates her lessons to us with patience,
passion and dedication.
