QUESTION 1

Figure Q1 show a support beam system that consist of member AB and BC that connected
by a pins at point A, B and C. Pin at B and C have a double shear while pin at A only have a
single shear. Taking the allowable normal stress of member BC as 200 MPa and the
allowable shear stress for the pins is 70MPa. Determine:

i) The required thickness of member BC, and

ii) The diameter of the pins at A and B.

QUESTION 2

a) A bar having a cross-sectional area A is constrained to fit horizontally between two fixed
supports at a distance L from each other as illustrated in Figure Q2(a). The rod is
subjected to a positive temperature change of ΔT. Taking the modulus of elasticity of the
bar as E and its coefficient of thermal expansion as α, express the stress σ in the r d in
terms of ΔT, E, and α.

b) Two identical steel [E = 200 GPa] pipes, each with a cross-sectional area of 1,300 mm2,
are attached to unyielding supports at the top and bottom, as shown in Figure Q2(b). At
flange B, a concentrated downward load of 120 kN is applied. Determine:

ii) the normal stresses in the upper and lower pipes, and
iii) the deformation of flange B.
