Topic:

1) Primary involvement of Civil Engineering in Transportation

Transportation has always played an essential role in the development of society, originally
with regard to trade routes and harbours, but more recently with regard to land- and air-based
systems as well.
While many people are familiar with the field of civil engineering in general, civil engineers
are often associated solely with the creation of roads, bridges, and other physical and naturally
constructed environmental structures. What some people might not be aware of is the impact that
civil engineering has on transportation and traffic in major cities across the world. As the architects
of our roads and highways, civil engineers have made significant strides in creating safer streets
and less traffic on roadways.
A key role of civil engineers is the maintenance of current existing roads and infrastructure.
Looking for better methods to improve and manage the bridges and roads already in existence,
civil engineers are constantly seeking innovative methods for reducing traffic, air pollution, and
much more. With electric cars growing in popularity, engineers widely believe that air pollution
could be significantly reduced if this trend continues.

2) Careers of civil engineering in transportation

Transportation engineering is a type of civil engineering. Transportation engineers are

responsible for planning, designing and constructing roadways, ports and railways, and also
perform inspections and maintenance to keep these routes safe for travel.

Highway Engineer
With the many inter- and intrastate
highways in this country, the work of
highway engineers is evident. Their
job involves many aspects of urban
planning, and highway engineers are
also tasked with designing and
implementing pedestrian travel routes,
such as bicycle lanes. Analyzing traffic
patterns, budgeting, safety evaluation
and the use of urban planning design
controls are key duties associated with highway engineering.

Airport Engineer
Airport engineers are
responsible for the design and
building of airports, hangars
and airfields. The precise and
careful analysis of air traffic
patterns, wind direction and air
traffic safety are of utmost
importance to airport
engineers; the safety of an
airport facility lies in its design.
Port Engineer
Port engineers, also known as harbor
engineers, design commercial
waterways similar to the way that
highway engineers design roadways.
Actually working on the water is
essential for this type of transportation
engineer, as they need to be able to take
measurements, assess port, harbor and
canal structures, and perform
maintenance.

Railroad Engineer
Railroad engineers, sometimes
called locomotive engineers,
can work as designers of
railways or as operators and
dispatchers. Railroad engineers
most commonly work on
redesigning the country's
existing railroads so that they
are safer and more efficient,
rather than planning new
railways. When railroad
engineers do work on the
planning, design and
construction of new railways, they are typically mass transit systems such as light rails and
monorails.
