The Philippine Housing

(Reaction Paper)

One of the most important needs of human is shelter. Because it keep people from
harms and gives a feeling of well being and boost their will to live. A shelter is also where
family members interact and where the children are raised properly.

After reading the Philippine Housing Shortage and the Real Estate Boom: Rent and
Prices. I realized why it is hard to have a affordable housing in our country. That is also why
many of the people in the Philippines are in danger zone. Because those people considering the
street, riversides, and along train tracks as their home. Because lowcost rental housing is limited
that’s why they chose to live in danger zones.it is because of various factors that affects the
people to have a affordable house. The ratio of unit housing cost to income is rapidly rising is
one of the factor that affects affording a own house. And also there are few low cost alternatives
to home ownership in the formal market. Many of us cannot afford homeownership only 50
percent of households in the country can afford to buy a home in the formal market. According
to article that I’ve read in the Philippines, less than 1/3 can afford proper shelter. In Metro
Manila alone, there are 3.1 informal settlers; 23% stay in government land, 22% in private
properties, 15% in danger zones and 40% on infrastructure sites. And it is because of the factors
that affects such as government policies, financing, institutional subsidies and interventions. I
think migration of people in rural areas to urban areas is one of reasons. Most people usually
think that they will have a better life if they live in urban areas rather than rural and a higher
income compare to rural areas. Employment rate in the Philippines has also have a impact in
owning nor renting a house because unemployed people can’t help the family to have a income
to support renting nor buying own house.

I am glad to know that the government help the poor to embarked on the National
Shelter Program to provide housing for informal settlers and other families who do not have
enough income to rent nor buy houses in the prevailing market rates. And giving a program that
helps to create a significant number of jobs in the construction sector, which would benefit many
poor and low income household.
