Overall I found evaluating myself using the teaching rubric was very helpful. It showed me what
components people look for when evaluating teaching. It also allows me to see my strengths and
weaknesses. The 3 points I feel I would like to address about what it taught me about my lesson and
teaching as a whole. I will pick one from each of the three categories and then dive into specifics.
On planning and preparations I gave myself a 27/33. I think I did very well in the having the parts
of my lesson together quite well. Where I lost points was with engaging the students. I focused so much
on making sure I was clear and finishing the material I did not include a lot of areas that are fun. I could
be as clear as day and explain well but none of that matters if my students aren't listening. For example,
in the pre assessment part what seperates a two from a three is tailoring the assessment to student
interest. I feel making a exit ticket that is engaging will be more fun for the students and kind of alleviate
pressure off of them when completing it. They will see it as a fun activity instead of a task.
On instruction and environment I gave myself a 36/42. I think this is the hardest section because
it requires a lot of experience in order to execute well. A lot of parts include knowing how to interact with
my students and predicting how to handle situations. I feel like this is the most important part though
because it an area I feel like I could monitor with over the course of my teaching. However I did feel I did
very well in terms of assessment and using academic language throughout. My entire lesson I kept
referencing using the definitions on the board to use academic language and that would allow me to
assess my students well. I felt I really did a good job with accountable math talk.
On professionalism I had a hard time evaluating this because it was in a college classroom
setting. I feel like when you are with your peers normally dressed in sweats it is hard to adapt to your
teaching attitude. I feel like in the future I will have trouble with the dress just because I love being comfy
and that is not always professional. I do feel like I will do well with the greeting because I like being
engaged and comfortable around people. I learned a lot through this commentary
