Assignment

Instruction: Being safe from COVID19, while you are in your home please read
your physics text book of Unit 5 (Introduction to Electronics) and answer the
following questions. And also try to workout on the four projects.

1. Explain the process of thermionic emission and list things that it depends on.
2. (i) Explain how does x-ray is produced from the x-ray tube. (ii) For what purpose we
use a cathode ray oscilloscope and how?
3. Compare electrical properties of materials grouped as Conductors, Semiconductors and
Insulators. What do you say about the Forbidden Energy Gap of these materials?
4. What are an Intrinsic Semiconductors? Give examples of Intrinsic Semiconductors?
What are the charge carriers in them?
5. What are Extrinsic Semiconductors? Explain the construction of n and p-types
semiconductors with necessary diagrams.
6. Boron has only three electrons in its outer shell. Explain why doping a silicon crystal
with a small amount of boron makes it a p-type semiconductor.
7. A p-type material is brought into contact with an n-type material. Explain (i) why both
materials are initially uncharged. (ii) Why a voltage appears across the junction, the p-
type being negative.
8. Explain the working principle of pn Junction Diode and discuss its Forward and Reverse
Bias.
9. Describe working principle of Half Wave Rectifier and Full wave Rectifier with the help
of circuit diagrams.
10. What do you think the difference between pnp and npn transistors?
11. Write the three operating region of bipolar junction transistor and explain the
differences?
12. Draw the common base, common emitter and common collector configuration circuit?

Group Assignment (Unit-5 introduction to electronics)

[Using LDR, LED, Thermistor and Transistor]
Project 1: LDR, buzzer, variable resistor and transistor

Based on the circuits shown below (from your text book in fig 5.58), Explain how these circuits
work? If possible show their functions using Crocodile Clip simulation software (or any
electronic simulations software). Where do such circuits or sensors are applied in your daily
life? (you will present your work in group)

Project 2: LDR, LED, variable resistor and transistor

Based on the circuits shown below (from your text book in fig 5.59), Explain how these circuits
work? If possible show their functions using Crocodile Clip simulation software (or any
electronic simulations software). Where do such circuits or sensors are applied in your daily
life? (you will present your work in group)
