Worksheet no. 1

A. Demonstrate the basic skills of Ultimate Frisbee using the mechanics stated in your handouts or
you may use instructional videos from the web.
B. Take pictures of your performance (step by step)
C. Consider the following items:
1. Preparatory position (stance)
2. Proper grip
3. Posture when throwing or catching
4. Footwork
5. Follow through
D. Label and describe each picture.
E. Basic Skills
1. Forehand throw

Preparation Stance-standing position which allows you to maximize your strength, power, and speed,
while decreasing risk of injury.

Proper Grip- you will need to use your thumb, index finger, and middle finger while keeping the other
fingers out of the way. These three fingers alone should be enough to hold the weight of the disc and to
give you the power and control you need.

Posture when throwing- bring the disc back with your dominant hand while shifting your weight toward
your throwing foot, so that about 80% of your weight is on your throwing foot, while 20% of your weight
is on your other foot. Your arm should be close to parallel to the ground.

Footwork-Step your dominant foot obliquely forward, elbow out.

Follow through- flick your wrist as you move your throwing arm from the outside to the inside of your
body (the opposite motion of throwing a backhand). The power should come from the shoulder, passing
naturally through the elbow and into the wrist, allowing the disc to spin. When you throw the disc, make
sure that you rotate your body, using your throwing side first, and then your shoulders

2. Backhand throw

reparation Stance-standing position which allows you to maximize your strength, power, and speed,
while decreasing risk of injury.

Proper Grip- Pinch grip the frisbee with your thumb of your dominant hand on the top and 4 fingers on
the bottom. You may also put your index finger along the rim of the frisbee with 3 fingers on the
bottom.
Your fingers should be extended not curled.

Footwork- Step your dominant foot across the other foot, elbow out;

Follow through- Begin straightening your elbow followed by your wrist with a snap. Point your index
finger at your target. The frisbee should remain flat or parallel to the ground throughout this entire step.

3. Pancake catch

whenever possible, catches should be attempted two-handed, with the palms facing each other. The
pancake style is close to the body, with hands at right angles to each other. The receiver should attempt
to get their body behind the direction of travel of the disc.
4. Two-hand catch
`

-With arms outstretched, anticipate the path of travel of the disc and secure it with an overhand grip
along the rim, with thumbs on the underside and the rest of the fingers on the topside of the disc.

Rules of Ultimate Frisbee

A. Discuss in not more than 5 sentences the nature of the game of Ultimate Frisbee.
Ultimate as a team sport played with a flying disc. The object of the game is to score points by
passing the disc to a player in the opposing end zone, similar to an end zone in American
football. Players may not run with the disc, and must keep a pivot while holding the discThe
non-contact nature of the game makes it co-ed friendly. Women feel equally appreciated for
their exploits on the field.
B. Choose 5 from the list of turnovers and give example of situations (for each) of how these
violations occurred.

1. Down
The disc contacts the ground while it is not in the possession of an offensive player .

2. Hand over
The disc is handed over from one offensive player to another without ever being completely
untouched by both players.

3. Stall-out
The thrower has not released the disc before the marker first starts to say the word “ten” in
the stall count.

4. Dropped-pull
There is an uncontested offensive receiving foul; or during the pull, the receiving team
touches the disc before it contacts the ground, and fails to catch the disc .

5. Interception
A pass is caught by a defensive player

C. Cite 3 types of fouls in playing Ultimate Frisbee and give example of situations (for each) of how
these fouls happened.

1. Force-out fouls
If an airborne player catches the disc and is contacted by an opposing player before landing,
and that contact causes the player to land out-of-bounds instead of in-bounds, or out of the
end zone instead of in the end zone, it is a foul on the opposing player and the fouled player
retains possession at the spot of the foul. If an uncontested force-out foul results in an in-
bounds player landing outside the end zone being attacked when they would have landed in
the end zone without the foul, a goal is awarded.
2. Strip Fouls
occurs when a defensive foul causes the receiver or thrower to drop the disc after they have
gained possession.
`

3. Blocking Fouls
When the disc is in the air a player may not move in a manner solely to prevent an opponent
from taking an unoccupied path to the disc

Worksheet no. 3

A. Research, discuss and illustrate one (1) offensive and one (1) defensive tactic in playing ultimate
Frisbee.
1. Offensive Tactic

The Stack is a formation whereby the offensive team will create space (passing lanes) by all
starting in a vertical line along the middle of the pitch to create space along the sides of the field
to cut into. One by one, the receivers make their runs for a pass (cuts). For each receiver to have
an open space to cut into, the other five receivers have to stay out of the way. Knowing who will
cut and who will stay requires the players to have a good awareness of one another. The
simplest way of cutting is for the person on the front of the stack to cut first, and then the
second and so on until the disc is received.

If you cut, you will either get the disc or you won’t. If you do, then it’s your turn to throw. If you
make a cut but don’t get thrown the disc it is important to clear out. Run as fast as you can to
the back of the stack. From here you will be able to watch for your next opportunity to cut.

Clearing out is important because it creates space in front of the thrower allowing the disc to be
thrown in that area. The thrower only has ten seconds to find a receiver. If you cut in but don’t
get the disc, the thrower might then have only a few seconds remaining to release the disc – so
be sure to get out of the way so a teammate can cut in before the ten seconds are up!

2. Defensive Tactic

The Cup is effective against teams with weak handlers but most teams have such good disc skills
that they beat this zone fairly easily. The cup is essentially an extended force, usually towards
the middle of the field. In respect of the 3m double team rule, 1 player forces and the next 2
look to extend this force from 3m away. The other 4 down field players look to mark an area,
each tracking offensive players who come into their area. The Cup is considered slightly ‘old
skool’ these days, as the ‘Junk’ is usually preferred.
