ECV5601 – ACCIDENT ANALYSIS & PREVENTION

M.Sc. Highway & Transportation Engineering

Faculty of Engineering, University Putra Malaysia

Take Home Test : 2 (20%) First Semester Year 2017/2018 2 Weeks

Question 1: ICT Enforcement

Study of human behaviour offers very deep insight into causes of accidents leading to valuable
guidance for avoidance of accidents. Past studies reported that most road users perceived the
chances of being caught for traffic rules violation is higher when the presence of road traffic
police along the road is frequent, thus influencing them to obey traffic rules. Even though this
enforcement technique is effective, the issue of police manpower does not allow it to be
implemented thoroughly. The emergence of information and communication technologies (ICT)
has brought about new techniques of enforcement.

Review relevant articles related to different types of traffic rules enforcement using ICT system.

(a) Discuss on the various types of ICT enforcements. The objectives, positive and negative
aspects, experience of implementation in other countries and final conclusions on this
issue.

(b) Include diagrams, illustrations, tables, etc. where necessary to support your discussion
and recommendation.

Question 2: Forgiving Road Furniture

Road Authorities around the world are developing best practices to reduce the number of fatal
and serious injury crashes on roads by making their roads more “forgiving.” Roadside
obstructions such as utility poles, sign posts and trees are typically located close to the travelled
way, and in many cases their presence close to the road is required.  Unfortunately drivers do
make mistakes near these obstructions and they do impact these obstructions all too frequently.
It is critical that road authorities use state of the art technologies and best practices to reduce the
severity of these impacts.

Review relevant articles related to different types of forgiving road furniture.

(a) Discuss on the various human cause and road related features that contribute to
incidence of crashes into the roadside obstructions. Recommend at least TWO (2)
engineering treatments to reduce the severity of these impacts.

(b) Include diagrams, illustrations, tables, etc. where necessary to support your discussion
and recommendation.

Instructions:

a) The Internet provides a new source of transportation safety resources. But for related cited
journals, students may search through ScienceDirect or Scopus journal database for journals
such as Accident Analysis & Prevention, Injury & Prevention, Safety Science, Transportation
Engineering, etc.

b) Student will provide a write-up of about 10 pages per question (including diagrams, tables,
illustrations), single-line spacing, 12-point Times Roman font, with 1 inch left-and-right margin.

c) This task encompasses two program outcomes: PO8-Critical Thinking, and PO12-Lifelong
Learning. Details of assessment rubrics are attached for easy reference.

d) Students are strictly advised to avoid cut-and-paste or plagiarizing of another student work.

e) Report must to be submitted by 6.00 pm, 18 December 2017 (Monday).
