Chapter -1: Introduction and Mathematical Modelling of Linear System
Introduction:
Automatic control is essential in any field of engineering and science. Automatic control is an
important and integral part of space-vehicle systems, robotic systems, modern manufacturing systems,
and any industrial operations involving control of temperature, pressure, humidity, flow, etc. It is
desirable that most engineers and scientists are familiar with theory and practice of automatic control.
Definitions. Before we can discuss control systems, some basic terminologies must be defined
Controlled Variable and Control Signal or Manipulated Variable. The controlled variable is the
quantity or condition that is measured and controlled. The control signal or manipulated variable is the
quantity or condition that is varied by the controller so as to affect the value of the controlled variable.
Normally, the controlled variable is the output of the system. Control means measuring the value of the
controlled variable of the system and applying the control signal to the system to correct or limit deviation
of the measured value from a desired value. In studying control engineering, we need to define additional
terms that are necessary to describe control systems.

Speed Control System. The basic principle of a Watt’s speed governor for an engine is illustrated in the
schematic diagram of Figure. The amount of fuel admitted to the engine is adjusted according to the
difference between the desired and the actual engine speeds.
The sequence of actions may be stated as follows: The speed governor is adjusted such that, at the
desired speed, no pressured oil will flow into either side of the power cylinder. If the actual speed drops
below the desired value due to disturbance, then the decrease in the centrifugal force of the speed
governor causes the control valve to move downward, supplying more fuel, and the speed of the engine
increases until the desired value is reached. On the other hand, if the speed of the engine increases above
the desired value, then the increase in the centrifugal force of the governor causes the control valve to
move upward. This decreases the supply of fuel, and the speed of the engine decreases until the desired
value is reached. In this speed control system, the plant (controlled system) is the engine and the
controlled variable is the speed of the engine. The difference between the desired speed and the actual
speed is the error signal. The control signal (the amount of fuel) to be applied to the plant (engine) is the
actuating signal. The external input to disturb the controlled variable is the disturbance. An unexpected
change in the load is a disturbance.
A system that maintains a prescribed relationship between the output and the reference input by
comparing them and using the difference as a means of control is called a feedback control system. An
example would be a room temperature control system. By measuring the actual room temperature and
comparing it with the reference temperature (desired temperature), the thermostat turns the heating or
cooling equipment on or off in such a way as to ensure that the room temperature remains at a
comfortable level regardless of outside conditions. Feedback control systems are not limited to
engineering but can be found in various non-engineering fields as well. The human body, for instance, is
a highly advanced feedback control system. Both body temperature and blood pressure are kept constant
by means of physiological feedback. In fact, feedback performs a vital function: It makes the human body
relatively insensitive to external disturbances, thus enabling it to function properly in a changing
environment.
Closed-Loop Control Systems. Feedback control systems are often referred to as closed-loop control
systems. In practice, the terms feedback control and closed-loop control are used interchangeably. In a
closed-loop control system the actuating error signal, which is the difference between the input signal and
the feedback signal (which may be the output signal itself or a function of the output signal and its
derivatives and/or integrals), is fed to the controller so as to reduce the error and bring the output of the
system to a desired value. The term closed-loop control always implies the use of feedback control action
in order to reduce system error.
Open-Loop Control Systems. Those systems in which the output has no effect on the control action are
called open-loop control systems. In other words, in an open loop control system the output is neither
measured nor fed back for comparison with the input. One practical example is a washing machine.
Soaking, washing, and rinsing in the washer operate on a time basis. The machine does not measure the
output signal, that is, the cleanliness of the clothes.
In any open-loop control system the output is not compared with the reference input. Thus, to each
reference input there corresponds a fixed operating condition; as a result, the accuracy of the system
depends on calibration. In the presence of disturbances, an open-loop control system will not perform the
desired task. Open-loop control can be used, in practice, only if the relationship between the input and
output is known and if there are neither internal nor external disturbances. Clearly, such systems are not
feedback control systems. Note that any control system that operates on a time basis is open loop. For
instance, traffic control by means of signals operated on a time basis is another example of open-loop
control.
Mathematical model
If the dynamic behavior of a physical system can be represented by an equation, or a set of
equations, this is referred to as the mathematical model of the system. Model of system – the
relationship between variables in system.
Why do we must study the model of control system?
Quantitative mathematical models must be obtained to understand and control complex dynamic
systems. (analysis and design)

Differential Equation: (time domain model) are used because the systems are
dynamic in nature.
This principle implies that if a system model has responses y 1(t) and y2(t) to any two inputs x1(t) and x2(t)
respectively, then the system response to the linear combination of these inputs: ax1(t) + bx2(t) is
given by the linear combination of the individual outputs, i.e. ay1(t) + by2(t).
In order to analyze the behavior of physical systems in time domain, we write the differential equations
representing those systems:
Electrical systems (KVL and/or KCL, an electric network can be modeled as a set of nodal equations
using Kirchhoff’s current law or Kirchhoff’s voltage law).
Mechanical systems (Newton’s laws of motion)
Hydraulic systems (Thermodynamic & Conservation of matter)
Thermal systems (Heat transfer laws, Conservation of energy)
The model of mechanical translational systems can obtain by using three basic elements mass,
spring and dashpot. When a force is applied to a translational mechanical system, it is opposed by
opposing forces due to mass, friction and elasticity of the system. The force acting on a mechanical body
is governed by Newton‘s second law of motion. For translational systems it states that the sum of forces
acting on a body is zero.
(i) Ideal mass element: Consider an ideal mass element shown in fig. which has negligible
friction and elasticity. Let a force be applied on it. The mass will offer an opposing force
which is proportional to acceleration of a body.

(ii) Ideal frictional element: Consider an ideal frictional element dash pot shown in fig. which has
negligible moment of inertia and elasticity. Let a torque be applied on it. The dash pot will offer an
opposing torque is proportional to angular velocity of the body.

(iii) Ideal elastic element: Consider an ideal elastic element, torsional spring as shown in fig. which has
negligible moment of inertia and friction. Let a torque be applied on it. The torsional spring will
offer an opposing torque which is proportional to angular displacement of the body.

Transfer Function
Transfer function of a LTIV system is defined as the ratio of the Laplace Transform of the output
variable to the Laplace Transform of the input variable assuming all the initial condition as zero.
If the transfer function is unknown, it may be found out experimentally by applying known inputs
to the device and studying the output of the system
Equation (1) & (2) give a mathematical model of the circuit. Taking the L.T. of equations (1) & (2),
assuming zero initial conditions, we obtain

Block diagram for control system:
A control system may consist of a number of components. A block diagram of a system is a
pictorial representation of the functions performed by each component and of the flow of signals. The
elements of a block diagram are block, branch point and summing point.
Block:
In a block diagram all system variables are linked to each other through functional blocks. The functional
block or simply block is a symbol for the mathematical operation on the input signal to the block that
produces the output.
Summing point:
Although blocks are used to identify many types of mathematical operations, operations of addition and
subtraction are represented by a circle, called a summing point. As shown in Figure a summing point may
have one or several inputs. Each input has its own appropriate plus or minus sign. A summing point has
only one output and is equal to the algebraic sum of the inputs.

Signal Flow Graph Representation of a system obtained from the equations, which shows the flow
of the signal
A signal flow graph is a diagram that represents a set of simultaneous linear algebraic equations.
By taking Laplace transfer, the time domain differential equations governing a control system can be
transferred to a set of algebraic equation in s-domain. A signal-flow graph consists of a network in which
nodes are connected by directed branches. It depicts the flow of signals from one point of a system to
another and gives the relationships among the signals.
The relationship between an input variable and an output variable of signal flow graph is given by
the net gain between the input and the output nodes is known as overall gain of the system. Mason‘s gain
rule for the determination of the overall system gain is given below.
